(hinge remainder in sheet margin) has spots of typical natural brownish gum build up and the 12ca. has some split perfs. in central vertical row at top, Very Fine to Extremely Fine, a marvelous set for the connoisseur. 20 nh/og image1894, Empress Dowager 60th Birthday, 1st printing, 1ca. reddish orange, vertical pair imperforate between (Chan 22a. Scott 16a), the variety being the 2nd and 3rd stamps in a spectacular vertical strip of five with interpane margins at top and left, good color, well centered, unused with large part to full original gum, the imperf. between pair is fresh, never hinged, toned in the interpane margins, Fine to Very Fine and a noteworthy multiple with this variety.

This was originally part of the pane of twenty from the Sir Percival David collection (Robson Lowe, Basel, 18.3.1966, lot 111), which was imperforate horizontally between the 2nd and 3rd row of stamps, thereby yielding four imperforate between vertical pairs. The corner block of ten (2 x 5) from the right of the pane later appeared in the M.F. Huang collection, Zurich Asia (Hong Kong), 21.6.2003, lot 88. (Image1) (Image2)

Scott 20a), with sheet margin at right, deep rich color, choice centering, unused with practically full original gum, first stamp has a small surface irregularity below left diagonal stroke of "A" in "China", nevertheless Very Fine and an immensely rare variety.

Scott 22 var.), with 5mm. sheet margin at left and 32mm. sheet margin at foot, forming a reconstructed block of six from Pane 2 with lower pair tête-bêche, canceled by Shanghai seals in red, with a superb strike in the lower sheet margin, large part o.g., most probably pairs imperforate vertically with perfs. subsequently trimmed, trivial gum wrinkling, Very Fine and a remarkable multiple.

The Shanghai seal in red is a special type, which is different from the normal Shanghai seal used for postal cancellations. This type of cancellation was most probably prepared by de Villard for application on his specially arranged varieties. (Image1) (Image2)
