The expansive scene looks across the historic Polish capital and the Vistula River, with Wawel Castle prominently represented and banners identifying Lobzovia, Clepardia, Cracovia and Casimiria. Heraldic devices appear across the upper portion, while processions, buildings, fortifications, roads and river traffic fill the detailed landscape. Braun and Hogenberg's original Kraków panorama was published in Cologne in 1617–18 and measured approximately 14½ x 41½ inches, making it one of the unusually large folding views in the celebrated atlas series. This example is further distinguished by Arabic annotations appearing in the margins. Added inscriptions and the exact printing characteristics need to be examined outside the frame to determine actual age. The Virgin is shown tenderly embracing the Christ Child, their cheeks touching in the classic Eleusa, or "Tenderness," iconographic type. The Vladimir image is among the most celebrated and frequently reproduced icons in Russian religious art. The central composition is surrounded by four individually rendered saints along the lateral borders, each identified by Church Slavonic inscriptions, adding devotional and family-icon interest to the piece. Comparable 19th-century Vladimir Mother of God icons are known with selected family or patron saints painted around the central image. Executed in the traditional manner with tempera on a prepared panel, accented with extensive gilding and finely detailed ornamental work to the garments and halos. The icon is attractively presented within a later gilt frame and black surround. Colors remain strong and the central figures display particularly pleasing detail and expression. The composition is set against a richly gilded ground with elaborate tooled and punched decoration extending through the border, while Christ is shown with radiant halo and raised arms in a traditional blessing gesture. The lower Church Slavonic inscription reads ("Resurrection of Christ"). This Western-influenced "Rising from the Tomb" type became especially popular in Russian icon painting during the Imperial period, alongside the older Orthodox "Descent into Hades" treatment of the Resurrection. Executed in tempera on a prepared wood panel with extensive gilt ornamentation, likely Russian, circa late 19th century.
