The capsule contains both silver-colored and gold-colored foil fragments, illustrating the material's two-sided construction. Kapton foil was applied to the exterior of the Command Module to protect the spacecraft and crew from extreme temperature variations encountered during the historic July 16–24, 1969 mission. The fragments are mounted to an illustrated certificate describing their purported removal from Columbia following splashdown.
