542 lafayette, marquis de image1829 Marquis de Lafayette Signed Letter to Guglielmo Pepe, written to exiled Italian General Guglielmo Pepe on October 15, 1829; letter translated to English:

"I am sending on to you, my deal General, a letter from our excellent Pira. It appears that his situation is improving. The new rumor about the situation in the Orient should be rather favorable to him. My very best wishes accompany it.

The newspapers are so on the lookout for everything that is happening that they leave nothing to be told in personal correspondence. Your countryman and friend must have let you know that we saw one another during his very short stay in Paris. I have already taken care of the matter which motivated his visit.

Another of your friends is expected at Grenoble where his daughter, his father-in-law, and his sister, I believe, are going to meet him. Mr. de Medici will not be there. It is certain that on his way back from Spain he will come to see his cousins from Paris. That would be an excellent opportunity for him to speak the Austrian language (again?) and to reconcile himself with the companions of the best days of his life. But is he capable of it?

This is what I am very doubtful about, all the more since - although he gets good advice here - he hears very bad advice (elsewhere).

The First President, Mr. Portalis, found it simplest not to reply to me. I should like to think that his intentions are good. Receive, my deal General, all my expressions of friendship."

an absolutely fascinating piece with excellent contents; letter features some light staining around left center, but is otherwise in very good condition; contents are part of a folded letter with appropriate postal cancels on cover; sent to Brussels; please see full photos online, rarely seen. 557 march, fredric imageFredric March 1945 Autograph Note Signed Regarding A Bell for Adano, An unusual piece of theatrical correspondence involving Academy Award-winning actor Fredric March (1897–1975). William S. Kies writes to March on January 2, 1945, thanking him for providing eight tickets to A Bell for Adano at New York's Cort Theatre.March has responded directly on the same sheet in his own hand, addressing Kies and writing a brief cordial note concluding "Sincerely, Fredric March," followed by the date January 4. The association with A Bell for Adano, in which March starred on Broadway as Major Victor Joppolo, gives the autograph particularly appealing theatrical context. Mailing folds and expected handling wear. (Image)
