Gratz, worked at the Albany NY Journal for approximately 55 years, beginning as a route boy in 1857 at the age of 10 and eventually worked his way up to business manager, the position he held just prior to his death in 1915 at the age of 67. The only years he did not work at the Journal were his early years and his service during the Civil War as a member of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery, Co. B, participating in all the engagements of his regiment including SpottsylvanIa, Cold Harbor, before Petersburg and Strawberry Plains. His writings were pungent and he contributed frequently to other newspapers and magazines at that time and after he transferred his field of labor to the business office of the paper.
