4544   image1845 New York Postmaster's Provisional, Fakes, Forgeries & Facsimiles, Assemblage of about 30 items including a genuine #9X1 (no margins), an attractive plate proof (#9X1TC5a) with a fake Boston c.d.s., and a nice Sperati forgery; the rest includes a few fairly convincing fakes including those from the Senf Bros.—though they are inscribed "Falsch"— and a reasonably good pair on cover by Peter Winter; the rest would not fool anyone (and most were not intended to); there are also a few facsimiles used for promotional illustrations, including an 1895 J.M. Bartels Price List (offering 5¢ & 10¢ 1847s for 75¢ & $3, respectively), two different 1870s advertising pieces from Brooklyn, N.Y. dealer, J. Allan Mason, and a 1909 corner card for the New York Stamp Society. A most interesting lot. (Image) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6) (Image7) (Image8) (Image9) (Image10)

4546   imageUsed Bureau Issue Plate Number Singles, An exceptional holding of more than 500 stamps from the First through the Fourth Bureau Issues. About half are mounted in an old-fashioned, 300-space approval book, the rest on seven blank pages. Values go as high as 30¢, though, of course, most are 1¢, 2¢ & 3¢; and there are also a few Back-of-the-Book issues. To give you an idea of the seriousness of this collection, there are at least 60 different plate numbers of the 1¢ #279 and 50 different of the 2¢ #279B! A fabulous lot.
