3379 cover 1954.1218 image1954 (Dec. 18), Rome-to-New York L.A.I. Crash Cover, recovered from Jamaica Bay and thus without adhesives, sent from Israel to New York City; with two-line inscription at bottom in black, the second line shifted to right; well-preserved given its ordeal, Very Fine.


The flight from Rome made three attempts to land at Idlewild Airport, crashing into Jamaica Bay on its fourth. Twelve crew and 22 passengers perished, but six passengers survived—as did the approximately 1200 kg of mail. Various handstamps were used on the recovered items.
