178 cover 1937.04.23 imageCover with two letters from Williard Branch, Williard Branch, Midway Island marine mechanic Correspondence, four covers carrying five letters to his parents, the first letter is datelined April 19 (1937) and describes his flight from Honolulu to Midway April 1937, then the quarters, crew, the island itself and its myriad of birds that reads, "Dear Mother, We left Honolulu (Pearl Harbor) at 7:30AM Saturday. The weather was nice and there wer twnety aboard including crew. Captain Lorber was the chief pilot. The trip was uneventful and we arrived at Midway at 3:15PM (time in the air 9 hours 45 min. distance 1300 miles). I was very surprised to find Mr. and Mrs. Tom Wilson aboard…We are not allowed to take pictures here due to Navy Dept. regulations….The crew consists of airport mgr., asst airport mgr, chief mech., marine mechanic (that's me) gen'l mechanic, airplane mechanic, two helpers, several radio men, a bug hunter who disinfects ships, the steward, his wife and a cook. There are also twelve Chimooros (South Sea Islanders to you) who do the washing, kitchen work, and some help with the airplanes…", the second letter is datelined April 23 and reads in part, "Today as for some time to come my main duty was to operate the launch. The plane lands in the lagoon and taxis up to the barge which is equipped to service it. Then there is where I come in. The passengers, their baggage, and anything else for Midway must come ashore…After the plane leaves, I tow the barge to the loading dock where another 4,000 gallons of gasoline is loaded in it and it is otherwise made ready for the next arrival…The total population of the island including the cable station, PAA crew and PAA construction gang is about 40 whites and 20 orientals. Quite a gang to be parked on a rock in the middle of the ocean…Today I learned how to start and operate the engines on a Martin Clipper….", the others June 27 1937, Aug. 16 1937 and from China in June 1946, Very Fine. Panay in China, to his wife back in Washington D.C., cover franked by eight Chinese stamps (five different) tied by Nanking cancels, unique "PAR AVION VIA EURASIAN & PAN AMERICAN AIRWAYS" double oval handstamp cachet on front and back, back with 3 cancels -- Canton in Chinese, Canton in English (dated 25 Nov. 1937) and Hankow in Chinese (dated 23 Nov. 1937) -- The U.S.S. Panay was in Chungking China on the Yangtze River when the Third Sino-Japanese War began in July 1937, the Panay was ordered back to Hankow. After completing a mission between Oct. 12 and Oct. 20 resulting in a round trip to Changsa, the Panay set out again from Hankow, heading to Nanking on Oct. 24. On Nov. 22, 1937, other ships began transporting the remaining Americans back to Hankow. THIS ENVELOPE WAS SENT ON NOVEMBER 23, 1937. On December 12, 1937, as a result of heavy Japanese bombing at 1:35 PM, the order to abandon the U.S.S. Panay was given at 2PM, completed at 3PM, and the ship was sunk by 4PM. During the attack, Lt. Commander Hughes suffered a broken hip and incapacitated. He was evacuated on the first boat that left the ship. A complete written account of the attack on the U.S.S. Panay accompanies. (Image)

According to Krupnick, there are no known covers from this flight, which transpired on April 23 (Manila to Hong Kong) and the return the following day, Krupnick suspects this is a survey flight
