LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
235 cover 1937.03.05 image"REC'D-AT KINGMAN REEF", large handstamp at left on cover signed by "Stewart Saunders, Airport Manager" and "Danilo Vucetich, Supercargo" addressed to Dr. W.O. French Jr., Alsup Clinic Dillingham Bldg., Honolulu T.H. (Territory Hawaii), 25¢ Clipper (#C20) tied by "Oakland Calif. Mar. 5, 1937" machine cancel, magenta two line "S.S. North Wind 2nd Expedition" handstamp at center, typed "Receoved Wm. O. French Jr. KINGMAN REEF Long. 162.23 West Lat. 6.25 North First Survey Flight Alameda, Calif. to Auckland N.Z. via Honolulu, Kingman Reef Pago Pago, To Auckland. Clipper No NC 16734 Capt. Edw. Musick Commanding Forwarded from Honolulu by Clipper No. NC 16734 Arrived March 23, 1937. On Board the SS North Wind", Extremely Fine, one of three known examples of this cancel from the first Kingman Reef Survey Flight and the only one signed by Vucetich.

According to Jon Krupnick's book "Pan American's Final Flight" (p. 15), the first Kingman Reef cover was discovered in 1974. In 1997, the other two were found among the estate of Danilo Vucetich, who served as the Supercargo for the SS North Wind -- the Supercargo is not the captain of the ship but is in charge of everything else. Danilo's son Alex, a retired Pan Am pilot, explained how the covers came to exist. Images of the other two covers appear on page 15 and are part of Krupnick's exhibit, also illustrated in Jon Krupnick's book "Pan American's Pacific Pioneers, The Rest of the Story", p. 252

236 cover 1937.04.14 imageDenied Carriage at Kingman Reef, 1937, anything marked at tiny atoll Kingman Reef in the 1930s is scarce, in this case Dan Vucetich (Supercargo) had planned to have Capt Musick carry this souvenir cover for his son Sandy on the survey flight to New Zealand, when this was declined (Clipper information crossed out and the favor unsigned by the flight crew), it was instead taken by the SS North Wind to Hawaii from which it was flown by Clipper to San Francisco, since there are only two known covers flown at this atoll consider this as close as most collectors will ever get to owning one, Fine to Very Fine.

Discussed and illustrated in Jon Krupnick's "Pan American's Pacific Pioneers The Rest of the Story" p. 507
