Scott notes, "The red pen-marks are small and lightly applied. They were used to invalidate a single sample sheet. One example of each plate position is known so canceled."

From the original sheet retained by the printer, Thomas Chubbuck, which was later separated into single examples after being sold to J.W. Scott.

26 11X6 imageSt. Louis, Mo., 1846, 20¢ black on gray lilac (Scott 11X6), position 1, a gorgeous three-margined example (just in at bottom), a perfect match to the attractive blue folded letter sheet datelined May 11, 1846, to the Charnley & Whelen brokerage firm in Philadelphia; the stamp with light manuscript pen cancel, tied by solid red St. Louis May 12 postmark; red straightline "PAID" handstamp and manuscript "20" rating at right, Very Fine, only 18 #11X6 covers are recorded in the USPCS census (this census #21182), ex Gross, T. Cullen Davis ("Texas Collector"), Weill Brothers sale and Dr. Charles E. Test ("Concord" collection), with 1989 P.F. certificate.

In 1912, a well-known paper dealer named Edward Hemingway purchased Charnley & Whelen's old papers and letters. While sorting through them, a large cache of St. Louis Bears was found, reportedly consisting of six 5¢ 79 10¢ and 16 20¢. Mr. Hemingway held all but a handful of them until his death, when they were bequeathed to the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvania. H.R. Harmer sold the covers in their sale of December 13, 1948, which listed 42 lots of covers, bearing six copies of the 5¢ 51 of the 10¢ and 14 of the 20¢. This cover was lot 34 in that sale.
