34 1 image1847, 5¢ red brown, used to Arad, Hungary (now Romania) (Scott 1), three-margined example tied by red grid cancel and blue pen manuscript "49", to 1851 folded letter sheet addressed to Arad, Hungary [now Romania]; faintly struck red New York May 26 postmark at right; red British "9 JU 9.1851" and double-circle Prussian Mail, plus black boxed 13 JUN Vienna transits on reverse; cover with light file folds and a tiny hole, Very Fine nonetheless, Alexander census page 937, with 2020 P.S.E. certificate.

Arad's fortress, built between 1763-83, served as the Hungarian rebels' headquarters during the latter part of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, and it was from Arad that Lajos Kossuth issued his famous proclamation of Aug. 11, 1849. The town's population in 1900 (the earliest records we could locate) was 53,903.

This cover was discovered in a family correspondence in 1997 and originally auctioned in June 1998, where it realized $23,000 including buyer's premium. Sent within the final two months of the 1847 Issue's validity, this is a key item for any 1847 collector or exhibitor.
