128   image1867, National Lincoln Monument Association Subscription Note, A fresh, unused note, 195 x 90 mm, engraved and printed by the U.S. Treasury and featuring a marvelous portrait of Lincoln, as well as the Altar of Liberty, both vignettes having been used on other Federal Notes & Bonds. The note has a small, neatly "patched" piece missing on the bottom edge and a couple of light bends, but is otherwise quite fresh and attractive., About Fine, A wonderful Lincoln item,

Congress passed legislation to create a Lincoln Monument Association in 1867. The Association commissioned sculptor Clark Mills to create a monument "commemorative of the great charter of emancipation and universal liberty in America." Mills proposed a multi-tiered, 36-figure, bronze sculpted monument that would a have at its peak a seated Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation. A national fund-raising effort was begun, but for political and practical reasons, the Association and Mills never finished their monument and the project languished until 1901, when the Congress designated an area for the proposed monument. By 1911, construction had started, and the completed monument was dedicated by President Warren G. Harding in 1922. (Image)

AN EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLE OF THIS EXCEEDINGLY RARE MARKING—ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED AND THE ONLY ONE ON FOREIGN MAIL.

The official Registered Mail System in the U.S. did not begin until July 1, 1855. Prior to that, several post offices had their own markings for recording valuable mail, the best known being Philadelphia's "R" for "Recorded". A few towns near the Canadian border adopted the Canadian term, "Money Letter". (Image)
