The largest private express operating in the Confederacy was the Southern Express Company, established when offices of Adams Express in the Southern States were purchased by Henry M. Plant, manager of Adams' Southern Division, and several associates. The offices were purchased April 1861, but the company did not begin operating under the Southern Express name until August.
