The James Ginsburg Collection of High Quality Canadian & United States Plate Blocks - October 31, 2025

Celebrating 140 Years

James A. Ginsburg is a veteran attorney and has been practicing law since 1968. He is a sole practitioner in Real Estate Transactions and acts as General Counsel for The Bilak Companies, a company involved with the purchase and operations of shopping centers throughout the Western United States.

Mr. Ginsburg received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School, where he was on the law review and earned his undergrad degree from the same university. He also played varsity basketball at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Ginsburg has active memberships with the State Bar of California and the Los Angeles County Bar Association since 1969. His hobby allowed him great pleasure and relaxation after long days at the office.

James’ passion for stamp collecting began when he was 10 years old, being introduced by his uncle, who was a serious philatelist. His father also facilitated his collecting by bringing stamps to him from the post office for his collection which helped him grow his collection. He remembers going to Woolworth’s and the five and dime, where he could buy “Lots” of stamps for mere pennies. These packets ignited his interest even further in stamps, allowing his interest in geography and history to become engaged. As he lived near a post office, he clearly remembers the thrill of the hunt in asking the postal clerk if he would remove the Plate Block from the sheet of stamps, allowing him to purchase it, “What a thrill!"

As his teenage years began, what we call the “fumes”; car fumes and perfumes, where sports and girls became more of a priority, his stamp collection took a backseat. Fast forward to his graduation from Law School and landing his first job where he began to make some “real” money, which allowed him to revisit his collecting. This placed him into a different category as a serious collector, allowing him to buy the more “expensive” items. This is when he truly began the quest of collecting early United States Plate blocks, and also became attracted to early Canadian plate Blocks. Along the way he connected with some very enthusiastic professionals and collectors that assisted in his quest. Among them was a longtime friend and dealer Larry Brassler who had a local stamp store. He truly loved going there and purchasing some very nice stamps and plate blocks, with Larry’s guidance and help. As time went on, he realized he needed to expand his exposure to find some of the items Larry didn’t have and started to attend stamp shows. That is where he met Bobby Prager and became friends with him instantly. Bob really helped me focus on “Quality” rather than quantity, showing me why and how this was best. It is with all of these great connections from my uncle to Larry Brassler and then Bob Prager that I was able to build my collection which I am now sharing with you. I hope that you enjoy seeing it and acquiring items of interest as much as I did when I searched these items out. Good luck and happy hunting!
