1894 (Oct) merchant's cover with embossed 'INVOICE ONLY/ES WIGG & SON/ADELAIDE' at upper-left, to "Featherstone/New Zealand" with
largely very fine strike of the 'Saved from wreck of the/WAIRARAPA' cachet in blue & the stamps washed-off, the reverse with cds of 'AUCKLAND/5NO94', 'WELLINGTON/6NO94' & 'FEATHERSTONE/7NO94', remarkably fine for mail from this famous and tragic
wreck. On the night of 29.10.1894, the 'Wairarapa' out of Sydney bound for Auckland was totally wrecked on Great Barrier Island, with the loss of 135 lives. This was a prime incentive for creation of the local pigeongram service. See Brian Peace at
pages 172-198 where he states at page 173 that only two covers from South Australia have been recorded: this is his SA1 - see page 189. The other cover - from Mount Gambier - sold at our auction of 25.6.2005 for $1495 (Sale 116 Lot 707). (Image1) (Image2)
