Sir John Eardley Eardley-Wilmot arrived in -.8.1843 as the new Lieutenant-Governor of van Diemen's Land. Faced with inherited financial & social problems, he proved an effective albeit unpopular appointee. In -.10.1846, he received advice from Whitehall that he was dismissed for "neglect of the convict system". He denied the charge and demanded a Committee of Inquiry, but died in Hobart on 3.2.1847. 2088 c image1848 & 1849 small envelopes to "Henry Condell Esq/Melbourne/Port Phillip" both with postmaster's endorsement "Westbury Feby 14" or "...15.5.49" and endorsed in red "Paid Sea Postage/9d" or "Paid Ship/Letter 5d", on arrival rated "6" or "3" in black, 'LAUNCESTON' and discernible strikes of the oval 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/MELBOURNE' arrival backstamp in red, the first is very fine, the other a bit soiled and with minor peripheral damage. An interesting duo. Henry Condell moved from VDL to Port Phillip in 1839 where he established a brewery. 1842-44, Condell was the first Mayor of Melbourne, and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council 1843-1850. 2089 c image1851 entire letter headed "Adelaide July 19th 1851" and signed "BR Leake" to his sister at "Rosedale/Campbell Town/Van Diemens Land" apparently carried per favor by ship with very fine 'LAUNCESTON/1AU1/1851' transit backstamp and largely superb strike of the postmaster's private 'C'TOWN/1.AUG.51' arrival handstamp on the face, rated "5" in black for an incoming shipletter but overwritten "6" in red for an additional 1d for inland delivery, two light ironed-out vertical folds hardly detract from the very fine appearance. Rare format of the 'C TOWN' marking, this being the latest of only four recorded examples. Sold at our auction of 27.7.2009 for $2680 (Sale 147 Lot 403). John Leake arrived in the Colony in May 1823. He was granted 2000 acres near Campbell Town, which he named Rosedale. Two of his sons took up property at Glenroy SA, near the Victorian border. Walter Davidson arrived at Hobart in -.01.1823 & was granted 640 acres, that he named 'Riccarton'. Ultimately, he held some 18,000 acres. (Image1)

2093 c image1860 cover to "The Right Revd/Bishop Goold/Melbourne" with very fine Imperf Chalons 2d green & 4d bright blue SG 31 & 38 (both with margins just touching to good; Cat £110 x5+ on cover) just tied by bold BN '62', very fine 30mm 'GENERAL-POST-OFFICE/HOBART-TOWN/[crown]/3FE3/1860' cds & tiny arrival backstamp of 'FE6/60' both in red, light soiling & minor flap repair. RPSV Certificate (2017) states the 2d is yellow-green SG 32, which is obviously incorrect. The 4d stamp has clearly had a small manuscript "X" removed, which is not mentioned on the certificate. Our professional opinion is that this makes the item more significant for proving fraudulent postal use of a previously used stamp. Under UV light the removal is not evident; in fact, the entire design disappears in a bright lime-yellow glow. (Image1)
