1886 (Aug 7) large-format envelope (187x118mm) to "Captain G Rowan, SS Crusader, c/o Archbold Harberg & Co, Hong Kong, China" with
QV Perkins Bacon Compound Perf 10x11½-12½ 1/- brown and 2/- crimson tied by Port Adelaide Squared Circle cancels, carried via Ceylon with 'COLOMBO/AU 31/86' transit and 'HONG KONG/ C /SP15/86' arrival backstamp, vertical fold, closed tear at right

extensive collection did not include any items from South Australia to Hong Kong or China, not even in the later UPU period. We expect that this item was not included in Don Pearce's census of recorded 2/- frankings. (Image1) (Image2)

Rue Perf 10 2d orange pair tied by an indistinct GPO duplex of indeterminate date, very fine strike of the scarce 'MISSENT/TO-ADELAIDE S.A' handstamp (presumably applied in error), minor blemishes. An unusual piece: perhaps it was sent somewhere
other than to Nairne, and the handstamp applied on return to Adelaide to explain the delay. The book parcel rate was 1d per 4oz x4. Ex Don Pearce.

1891 (Jan 28) bank cover to Ceylon "Per Cuzco" with scarce franking of QV De La Rue Perf 10 '2½d.' on 4d blue-green horizontal pair
tied by 'SHIP MAIL ROOM/S.A - S AUSTRALIA' duplex, fair Colombo arrival backstamp of FE12/91, back flap mostly missing, small repair at top & minor aging marks. Rare usage of the surcharge in the first month of issue. The Australian Colonies had been
advised that they would be admitted to the Universal Postal Union (UPU) from 1.1.1891, with a universal overseas letter rate of 2½d. However, admission was delayed (until 1.10.1891), and the new rate revoked by mid-February, except for mail to GB.

The rate was 2½d per ½oz. Perhaps the 1d green was added in error instead of another '2½d.' green, or in the belief that 'a little extra' might be required to get the item to this remarkable destination. Ex Don Pearce. (Image1) (Image2)
