1931 apparently commercial airmail cover to Warwickshire with Straits 4c purple & 6c scarlet x5 tied by two fair to fine strikes of
the 31mm 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/25AP/1931/ + ' cds (day before month), Singapore transit backstamp of '29AP/31', Malayan black/grey-blue 'BY AIR MAIL' label, vertical fold just clear of the label. The rate is problematic. Ted Proud states the rate was 6c
per ounce plus airmail fee of 42c per Imperial Airways Karachi-London (or plus 50c per KLM). This is therefore apparently 14c underpaid but was neither taxed nor diverted to surface mail. (Image1) (Image2)

1940 airmail cover endorsed on the reverse "From Ell Pous [?]/Christmas Island", to London with Straits KGVI Keyplates 1c black x2
& 6c scarlet (rounded corner) tied by two just identifiable strikes of the 30mm 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/ + ' cds, largely very fine triangular 'PASSED FOR - TRANSMISSION/ 6 ' censor handstamp of Singapore. Paid at the Empire Air Mail Scheme (EAMS) 8c rate
and not taxed or diverted to surface mail so apparently flown from Singapore, light folds & wrinkling. Rare censored mail from Christmas Island. EAMS was suspended on 3.9.1939. The triangular cachets were introduced from March 1940.
In -.1.1942, following Japanese air-raids, most of the civilians were evacuated to Perth. On the night of 10-11.3.1942, Indian troops stationed on the island mutinied & executed the British officer & four NCOs, and threatened to kill all other
Europeans who had remained on the island. The Japanese occupied Christmas Island from 31.3.1942 until the end of the war. (Image1) (Image2)

1950 (Oct 6) usage of Australian Forces formular aerogramme by a woman serving at American HQ in Tokyo to her husband aboard "Yacht
Seven Seas II/co Port Captain/Christmas Island/Indian Ocean" with Australian ½d & 3d tied by 'AUST ARMY PO/6OC50/214' cds (LRD), 25mm 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/6NOV50' arrival cds & light strike of the rarely seen triple-ring 'DISTRICT
OFFICER/[arms]/CHRISTMAS ISLAND' cachet in violet at lower-right, redirected to Hawaii with 29mm 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/19NOV50' cds.
An extraordinary BCOF usage. Phil Collas recorded the cds used at Tokyo only until -.9.1950. Sadly only the address panel remains but with significant excerpts from the chatty letter including "...out in Siberia (Tsukushima Is)...Mt Asama...had
erupted the week before...The mtn was fuming..." (Image1) (Image2)
