GALLIPOLI: Sergeant Alf Richards' War family archive on display pages including a photograph of him endorsed with sympathy to his
sister-in-law Ethel, 1904 real photo of Alf in an Army Band at Gibraltar, letters from Alf to his brother Harry headed "1st Battn Lan Fus/Aden/6 Oct 1914" en route from India and "Reigate Heath/Surrey/19.1.15" after arrival in England and of
15.2.1915 to Ethel, OAS cover to Harry bearing the autograph "from Sgt A Richards" with very fine strike of the unusual 'Passed by CENSOR/BEFM APO F-MR15' cachet in violet en route to Egypt, 2.3.1915 Egyptian telegram to Harry "I am coming to see you
tomorrow Richards", social letter to Ethel stating "...I am so excited...splendid news of Alf being awarded the VC...", undated letter to Ethel regarding Harry's death signed "Your loving brother/Alf". A personal & very desirable archive of a
Victoria Cross winner.
Alfred Richards was awarded the VC for gallantry during the 25.4.1915 landing at W Beach west of Cape Helles, an incident renowned as "Six VCs before Breakfast". Unsurprisingly, these were the first VCs won at Gallipoli. During the incident, Richards
was severely wounded, resulting in a leg having to be amputated. His brother Harry, who migrated to Australia after service in the Boer War, was killed on Gallipoli: see the previous lot.

1929-31 BANZARE original photo album (270x215mm) with about 150 photos of various sizes affixed showing expeditioners including the
leader Douglas Mawson, wildlife, geography, whaling, the tiny seaplane piloted by Stuart Campbell including one of the abandoned fabric-stripped fuselage, all in fine to very fine condition but the album is dilapidated. An important historical record
of this major Antarctic expedition. Ex Arthur Max Stanton, captain of the SY 'Discovery' & Mawson's second-in-command. Modest estimate to encourage purchase and restoration. (Image1) (Image2)

1929-31 BANZARE social cover to NSW with KGV 2d tied by a largely superb strike of the Expedition 'penguin' cachet, opened a bit
aggressively with part of the flap missing, minor blemishes on the face. With the enclosed letter on BANZARE SY 'Discovery' notepaper apparently to his girlfriend (who did not become his wife). Although undated, the letter indicates it was written
from Hobart before departure of the second expedition on 22.11.1930. He states "...This is going to be a very good trip. I think everything is much more cut and dried and everyone knows exactly what wants doing in his own line so we ought to get even
better results than last year. I met the manager of the local brewery here...and the next day we got a present of 12 gallons of beer..."
Philatelic BANZ covers are relatively common but mail from the expeditioners is very elusive. Stuart Alexander Caird Campbell was a RAAF officer who was senior pilot with BANZARE. In 1935, he undertook the famous 'Fly River Flights' in eastern Papua:

1904 (Apr 28) commercial cover from Wales to a forwarding agent in Calcutta with his cachet on the reverse, sent on to Japan - a
"foreign" destination - so taxed & with 'SINGAPORE TO HONG KONG/29MY/ 1904' transit backstamp, Japanese 'DUE/SEN/...' handstamp applied in rosine but the fee not paid & forwarded "co Agents/Christmas Island" with 'VICTORIA/30JU/04/HONG-KONG' &
'TUTICORIN/15JL/04' transit backstamps and 'CALCUTTA/20JL04/' arrival backstamp from where the agent BK Roy forwarded it to Christmas Island but it was apparently missent to Aden with 'SEA POST OFFICE/JL23/04' backstamp, then apparently returned to
Calcutta under cover then sent on with 'PENANG TO SINGAPORE/SE3/1904' transit backstamp & largely very fine 'CHRISTMAS ISLAND/SE--/1904' arrival cds on the face, further endorsed "[ship] gone to S'pore or Batavia/for repairs", 'SINGAPORE/NO22/1904'
arrival backstamp, from there returned to the sender with boxed 'REEXPEDIE' handstamp, minor soiling as one would expect. Ex Colin Riddell: sold at our auction of 24.11.2018 for $4245 (Sale 231 Lot 973).
A truly remarkable cover that demonstrates the extraordinary lengths to which the Post Offices of this time went to attempt delivery, all for a 1d paid. Colin Riddell stated that this is the earliest recorded Christmas Island transit cover, and
offers a slightly different explanation of the chain of events, which is included for consideration. (Image1) (Image2)
