1914 'The First Australian European Expeditionary Force 1914-15' postcards 1) with KGV, dated "16.9.14" probably from Broadmeadows
Military Camp with references to "...another day's shooting...we marched about 15 miles including a sham fight...", apparently posted under cover; 2) with Kangaroo, dated "31.10.14" at Albany held until after the convoy's departure with Kangaroo 1d
tied by Perth machine of 16NOV15', light crease at lower-left; 3) with Emu, superb unused. Very attractive cards. As indicated in the header, the original intention was for the troops to sail to England & join the Allied Forces in France. However, it
was decided they should do their training in Egypt and protect the Suez Canal.

David Sydney Wanliss was Commanding Officer of 5th Battalion, AIF, and led his troops ashore on 25.4.1915. He was awarded the CMG at Gallipoli, where Wanliss Gully was named after him. He was in Albany preparing for the arrival of the SS 'Miltiades'

GALLIPOLI: Selection of postcards and envelopes from Australians serving at Gallipoli mostly identified by known locations of the
various postmarks including the rare British-pattern skeleton '2 AUST LH BDE FIELD PO/7OC15/1800' cds (1800 = 6pm ?), noted Cairo YMCA cover-front endorsed "ED La Touche 2ndLt" from the month he was killed, 15.11.1915 with humorous pen & ink
illustration "Get to your dug out!!! Oh! How they spring to it!", envelope fashioned from office stationery remarkably to "Lautoka/Fiji Islands" with Lautoka arrival backstamp (sadly with overall toning), YMCA cover with superb '3RD AUST INF BDE
FIELD PO/20DE15' cds (the day the last Australian troops were evacuated & probably posted aboard ship), postcards headed "Anzac Nov 8 1915", "Trenches June 27th 1915" or "Gallipoli October 9 15", etc, good variety in the datestamps & British-pattern
censor cachets, also illustrated ANZAC address label on large piece from registered parcel from London to Victoria, condition variable but many are fine to very fine. Some of the cards with interesting or poignant messages. An excellent basis for
expansion.

GALLIPOLI: 1915 (July 19) OAS usage of Egyptian postcard with message in green ink (!; perhaps the sender was an auditor) headed
"At Sea/July 19th" (between Egypt & Imbros) and signed "No 177/P Marshall/RANBT" (= Royal Australian Navy Bridging Train), to Adelaide with '1ST AUST DIVISIONAL/TRAIN/ 22-JL-15/FIELD PO' cds in use on Lemnos, 'AIF PASSED CENSOR' cachet in violet &
arrival backstamps of '30AUG15'. Superb. The only mail we have seen related to this little-known unit. Gary Diffen has advised that he has only one RANBT item.
The RANBT was a "unique" engineering unit of untrained naval reservists, that departed Melbourne -.6.1915. After only 5 days training on Imbros in how to assemble horse-pontoons & other structures, they landed at Suvla Bay 7.8.1915 & quickly
constructed a much-needed pontoon pier. They also built a light railway for moving materiel. They were the only Australian naval unit serving in a European theatre of war, they became the most decorated unit at Gallipoli, and they were the last
Australian troops evacuated from the Peninsula. The unit was disbanded in -.5.1917. (Image1) (Image2)
