1841 (Sep 29) entire letter headed "Norfolk Island New South/Wales Septr 29th 1841" & signed "co Captain Maconachie &c/Governor of
Norfolk Island/New South Wales/for Stephen Dwyer per Augusta Jessie", carried free of postage to "Colonel C Abbott &c/Violet Bank/Nenagh/Ireland" with light but obvious 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/OC*30/1841/SYDNEY' cds in red apparently where endorsed at
upper-left "Convict Letter" in red & signed "JMcLean" (who was the Superintendent of Convicts), rated "8" for an inwards shipletter & the reverse with octagonal '12AP1842/LIVERPOOL/SHIP' in black also with 'AP13/42'-in-diamond of Dublin in red,
straight-line 'NENAGH/ 74 ' mileage mark & poor 'NENAGH/AP14/1842' cds, endorsed on the face "No person of this name/ever resided at Violet Bank/or is/there such a Gentleman/in the Coy [= County] of Tipperary" and in red "Not Known" & another
'NENAGH/J222/1842' backstamp, no further postal markings suggest that it was returned under cover, minor internal repairs with archival tape. An exceptional relic being a) the earliest recorded letter from Norfolk Island in private hands; b) the only
recorded Convict Letter from Norfolk Island; and c) one of the most important items from the South Pacific. Of course, it is also a significant New South Wales rarity. Illustrated in NICPM at page 4.
Stephen Abbot Dwyer was transported on the 'Augusta Jessie', arriving at Sydney 22.2.1840. The letter, to "My dear Uncle" states "If Stephen, your once Esteemed Friend, favourite and Nephew is not too far Condemned and forgotten to hope for pardon,
ah deign but to grant it ..." He pleads his innocence of "... any knowledge of the Crime for which I was Transported ... I was Unjustly Condemned and sent Away ..." He asks that his uncle care for his daughter Charlotte & "... that she is brought up
in the paths of Virtue & to be a father to her..." He mentions "...the horrid food we are obliged to put up with here ..." but of Captain Maconochie "... there is not a more benevolent or humane man ..." (!) and "... I changed my name to Dwyer, as my
own name was hateful to me".
We suspect that Colonel Abbott did live in or near Nenagh and that he was the writer's uncle, but that the family shame caused him to disown the writer and refuse to accept the letter. Stephen Dwyer died at Norfolk Island 11.2.1844, and was buried in
an unmarked convict's grave at Kingston. (Image1) (Image2)

very fine strike - and the only recorded example - of the rounded-boxed 'FREE/NORFOLK ISLAND' handstamp in red, '[crown]/GENERAL POST OFFICE/JA*13/1842/SYDNEY' arrival backstamp, a remarkably fine pre-stamp item. A great rarity and one of the most
important covers not just of Norfolk Island but of the New South Wales pre-stamp period, and of the Pacific Islands. Ex the Garrard Family: sold at our auction of 6.8.2011 for $27,600 (Sale 167 Lot 820) and 'Dubois' (18.3.2020) sold for £13,200.

1843 entire soldier's letter headed "Norfolk Island/22nd June 1843" endorsed at the top "From Jn Andrew Corporal 96th Regt" &
countersigned at left "WHulm Lieut Col/Major 96th Regt/Commanding/ Detachment", to Scotland rated "1" for the concessional soldiers' & sailors' 1d rate with a light but obvious strike of the very rare rounded-boxed 'PAID AT/NORFOLK ISLAND' handstamp
in red, rated "1" in faded manuscript, very fine oval 'PAID SHIP LETTER/[crown]/JY*20/1843/SYDNEY' transit datestamp in red on the face, the reverse with London transit of '30NO30/1843' & poor boxed arrival both in red, a little soiled on the face,
some splitting and internal reinforcing along the folds. Ex the Garrard Family: sold at our auction of 6.8.2011 for $19,550 (Sale 167 Lot 821). Illustrated in NICPM at p5.
The letter was carried to Sydney per 'Governor Philip' departed Norfolk Island 3.7.1843 & arrived Sydney on 20.7.1843; and per 'Eweretta' ex Sydney 1.8.1843. A wonderful soldier's letter and one of the most important Norfolk Island covers.
The semi-literate writer wonders if the addressee - his uncle - and his wife have written to him "...So many Ships Lost coming out and Going home...I was promoted to full Corporal 12 months before I knew of it...we expect our Regiment to be stationed
hear for 10 or 12 years...I Should Lick very well to take my Discharge and Stop in this Country...I am sick of traveling all over the world...our Regiment is all on Detachments all over vandiemensland Except 2 Compys hear and 2 Companys at

1862 (Dec 17) small mourning envelope to "The Revd GH Nobbs/Norfolk Island" with no postal markings, docketed at right "Bishop
Patteson/on Jany20th 1863", rust marks at right from a staple long-since- removed. The cover would have been carried per favor aboard the mission yacht 'Southern Cross'. With the enclosed personal letter headed "Dec 17 1862/Kohimarama" and signed "JC
Patteson [...] Bishop" regarding Nobbs' son George Edwin Coffin Nobbs who worked at the mission and who was killed by Santa Cruz natives in early-1864. The same fate befell Patteson on 20.9.1871. In 1861, the missionary John Coleridge Patteson was
chosen as the first Bishop of the Anglican Church of Melanesia. He established a Maori mission at Kohimarama, near Wellington. From the original find, sold in Melbourne in 2005 for $1895.
In 1828, George Hunn Nobbs arrived on Pitcairn Island, where he quickly assumed the roles of schoolteacher and chaplain, though it was only in 1852 that he travelled to England to be ordained. Over time he became the effective leader of the community
and supervised their transfer to Norfolk Island, where he remained after 16 of the islanders returned to Pitcairn in 1859, followed by a further 4 families in 1864.

1877 flimsy cover to "Wyaston House/Oxford/England" with NSW De La Rue 6d mauve tied by very fine Sydney duplex of 'SP11/77', no
other postal markings, opened a bit roughly with repaired tear at upper-centre. With the enclosed 8pp 8vo letter - very fine - headed "Norfolk Island/Aug 3 1877" and signed "RH Codrington" who states "...we have been badly used by vessels, which have
come & gone very quickly when they have come at all...our new Bishop was consecrated in February. Very little has been seen of him here...Island work is not much like what is commonly meant by Missionary work, it is mostly schooling [of "the Florida
boys", mission students from the Solomons]...we have many failures...but as much success as we can reasonably look for. Our new Chapel is advancing but not very rapidly...We are getting stone off a reef about 3 miles off..."
Robert Henry Codrington was headmaster of the Melanesian Mission School between 1867 & 1887. He also published the first study of Melanesian society & culture, for which he won acclaim as an anthropologist. Despite Bishop Patteson having been killed
in 1871, his replacement, the New Zealander John Richardson Selwyn, was not appointed until 1877. Work on the famous St Barnabas Chapel commenced in 1875 & the dedication was in 1880. (2 items) (Image1) (Image2)
