1884 stampless cover to Lincolnshire "Via Fijis" endorsed "6"(d), 'SUVA/SP24/1884/FIJI' cds & endorsed "1/- To pay" in rosine ink,
British "1/-" handstamp & largely very fine 'BRIGG/NO21/84' arrival backstamp, the flap largely missing & a minor repaired tear at right. Probably the earliest recorded cover from William Kendall to his sister Maryann Watson.
Kendall was sent to the island in 1867 as mission carpenter & wrote 'home' regularly until about 1905. Illustrated by C&B at page 19 & in NICPM at page 13. An official report dated -.5.1897 advised "...there are no stamps in use, coin sufficient to
cover is placed in the mail bags with the letters, the value of each stamp being marked by the Norfolk Island Postmaster on each envelope".

1889 cover crudely endorsed "Norfolk Island" in pencil at lower-left, to Massachusetts with New Zealand First Sidefaces 6d brown
tied by 'NZ/AUCKLAND/22AU89/ 8 ' squared-circle & NZ 'PAID ALL' handstamp twice in red, superb US 'DEFICIENCY IN/ADDRESS/SUPPLIED BY/San Francisco/PO' cachet in magenta, the reverse with 'SAN FRANCISCO/SEP28/PAID ALL' cds (no year) & New Bedford cds
of 'OCT/4/1889' plus Westport Point arrival of the next day, light soiling. Margaret Noack obviously believed this cover originated on Norfolk Island but we are not convinced. Offered 'as is'. (Image1) (Image2)

1892 (July 12) cover endorsed "Norfolk Island" at lower-left apparently in the same hand as the address in Ireland, with GB QV
Jubilee 4d grey-green & brown tied by light but very fine strike of the rare 'N.I'-in-Bars canceller - a superior strike on the reverse - with a light but unusually fine strike of the first 'NORFOLK ISLAND/JY12/92' cds - blank at the base - alongside
all in violet, Sydney/AU19/92' transit backstamp, 'T'-in-inverted-triangle & London '5D/F.B.' handstamp on the face and fine 'ARMAGH/SE26/92' arrival backstamp, opened-out & reinforced for display. An extremely rare and desirable cover. BPA
Certificate (1967). Illustrated in NICPM at page 14. On arrival in London, the British stamp was deemed invalid used on Norfolk Island & the cover treated as unpaid 2½d plus a fine of the same amount.
There was no similar item in the Steve Bradford, Margaret Hamilton or Garrard Family collections. Remarkably, David Murray-Brown had three 1890s covers & a large piece from a newspaper all with the first cds. They sold for an average of $3210, with
the earliest, of 1891, selling for $5040 (Sale 254 Lot 3442). However, none of these items had a strike of the 'N.I' obliterator.
Elsewhere it has been stated that the 'N.I' marking is a forgery, a fake or a fantasy. This is utter nonsense. Several other examples have been seen cancelling NSW stamps. And there is a well-known 'LHI' marking of the same pattern that was issued to
Lord Howe Island in the 1890s. (Image1) (Image2)

1893 cover with light but obvious strike of the first 'NORFOLK ISLAND/SP19/93' cds (blank at base), to Victoria with Sydney
backstamp of OC17/93' and NSW 2d Emu tied by part Sydney duplex, poor Maryborough arrival backstamp, stained at lower-left, overall soiling & the flap removed. The only cover we have recorded in this period to any of the Australian Colonies other
than New South Wales. The cds was introduced about early-1891. Most impressions are under-inked - as here - to poor. (Image1) (Image2)

1896 cover with above-average strike of the first 'NORFOLK ISLAND/JU15/[96]' cds, to "Port Fitzroy/Gt Barrier Island/New Zealand"
with very fine Auckland backstamp, the Norfolk cds largely obscured by NZ 2d mauve tied by bold 'A'-in-bars cancel, sadly ripped-open & missing the left-hand portion of the front panel. The stamp has been partly lifted to observe the Norfolk Island
cds. An extraordinary destination, and the site of the famous 'Wairarapa' wreck on 29.10.1894. Noted in NICPM at page 16, where three hand-drawn variants of the 'A' obliterator are pictured. However, none of them conforms to the example here, which
clearly has only five bars. (Image1) (Image2)

1898 (Nov 11) mourning cover to "The Revd WH Edgell/Melanesian Mission/Norfolk Island/via Sydney Australia" with Lilac 1d & Jubilee
1½d tied by 'UPPER-TEDDINGTON/NO11/98/TWICKENHAM' cds, missent across the Atlantic with 'NORFOLK VA/NOV20/98/RECD' backstamp, "Pacific Ocean" & hand-drawn 'fickle-finger' added to the address & sent on with Norfolk 'flag' cancel of the next day, the
reverse with unusual 'SANFRANCISCO/CALA/NOV 27 8-PM 98' machine (?) & Sydney transit of 'DE26/98', light soiling & light ironed-out central horizontal fold. Marvellous missent mail. William Henry Edgell, a New Zealander, joined the Mission in 1896 &
was ordained in 1899. Until 1905, he spent most of his time in the New Hebrides, later moving to Auckland as a missionary priest.

1899 (March) cover to Germany - a rare destination from Norfolk Island - endorsed at top "Sent by Ernest Herman Bernhardt, Norfolk
Island/Registered/No 57" without any local markings, New South Wales ½d grey & 2½d violet affixed to pay the registration fee only, carried via Auckland where both tied by 'A' in bars cancels and 'R'-in-circle handstamp applied alongside with very
fine 'REGISTERED/No ____/2 AP99/ AUCKLAND' backstamp, rubber 'REGISTERED/LONDON/18MY99' hooded-circle cds in violet on face and 'POSSNECK/19 5/99' arrival cds on reverse, contemporary receiver's pencil annotation in German on back, a couple of
trivial blemishes. Ex David Murray-Brown: sold for $3480 (Sale 254 Lot 3446). Illustrated by C&B at page 25 where it is stated to be "the earliest known registered cover from Norfolk Island" and in NICPM at page 75, where it is incorrectly stated to
date from May 1899. (Image1)

1900 (circa) proof of the frame only for a proposed stamp issue, a setenant strip of 3 inscribed 'NORFOLK ISLAND POSTAGE/[void for
vignette]/TWO 2 PENCE' + '.../SIX 6 PENCE' + '.../ONE 1 PENNY' with wide vertical gutters, ironed-out creases & professionally cleaned. Unissued. Ex Stephen Bradford: sold as a block of 6, and prior to being renovated, for $1230 (Sale 99 Lot 8).
Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2014) states "Genuine in all respects...Date of printing unknown but most likely in the early 1900s, probably by the NSW Government Printing Office. Great rarity as only a block of 6 ever recorded, from which this strip
originates". It has also been suggested that this essay was produced in the 1920s. However, stylistically, it is far more likely to have been produced around the turn of the century. (Image1) (Image2)

a block of 6) cancelled with three poor strikes of the 'NORFOLK ISLAND/ NO15' cds with a more legible strike alongside (no year slugs; the day & month slugs inverted) and multiple strikes of 'R'-in-vertical-oval handstamp probably of Sydney
(backstamp of 'NO25/01'), 'REGISTERED/ 4 /20DE01/LONDON' transit backstamp in red, soiling/damp spotting especially at left & the lower-right corner removed on opening. A rare triple-rate cover paid 2½d x3 + 3d registration = 10½d. (Image1) (Image2)

1905 (circa) red/buff 'CABLEGRAM' envelope with huge Pacific Cable Board map logo, to "Archie Quintal" with straight-line 'NORFOLK
ISLAND' cachet (78x5mm) in violet, horizontal fold. The cable station at Anson Bay was opened in 1902. It was the critical point on the trans-Pacific cable from British Columbia where the cable bifurcated, with extensions to Southport Qld and
Auckland. The handstamp is not included in NICPM at page 113, perhaps because it was used for telegraph operations only. Quintal is the most common surname on Norfolk Island: one of the original 1856 settlers from Pitciarn Island was Arthur
Quintal. (Image1)
