VICTORIA BARRACKS: 1914 (Dec 26; Boxing Day) OHMS cover with 'District Head-Quarters/Commonwealth Military Forces - 3rd Military
District/Victoria Barracks' imprint at lower-left below the only recorded example of the 'PRISONERS/OF WAR DEPOT' cachet (rated RRRRR) in light blue-green, to "J Englander/ German Club/Melbourne" with Kangaroo 1d red punctured Small 'OS' tied by
Melbourne cds, minor flap fault. See EFR at page 180. Ex Neil Russell: sold at our auction of 28.11.2016 for $840 (Sale 217 Lot 614).
We can find no reference to a POW camp at Victoria Barracks. However, Langwarrin Camp seems to have opened only in January 1915 so it is likely that the initial intake of internees were held at the Barracks. The letter may have been a request for the
addressee to turn himself in. (Image1) (Image2)
