ENOGGERA CAMP: 1915 (Oct 9) cover from England to Brisbane with KGV 1d with 'CM/&Co' perfin tied by London machine, on arrival
endorsed "Internment Camp/Enoggera" but later with 'UNCLAIMED/ENOGGERA CAMP' handstamp (affected by a vertical fold) applied, 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/29NO15/BRISBANE' backstamp in red from where forwarded to GCC Liverpool. See EFR at page 215. Evidence
that Enoggera Camp was still operating in late-1915, possibly only as a transit camp for new internees. Gary Diffen records the handstamp on 25.8.1915 & 29.11.1915 & rates it RRRRR. This third example is from between those dates. (Image1) (Image2)

ENOGGERA CAMP: 1918 (Jan 12) cover with KGV 1d red removed by the censor & Brisbane machine cancel, to "Internment Camp/Enoggera,
Brisbane" with a largely very fine strikes of the extremely rare 'PASSED BY/CAMP COMMANDANT/["signature"] Captain/[Co]mmandant, Internment Camp/Brisbane, Queensland.' cachet - the only recorded example; rated RRRRR - in violet, forwarded to
"Liverpool NSW" with poor Brisbane backstamp of 22JA18. See EFR at page 214. One of the most important items in the collection, providing proof that Enoggera Camp was still operating in early-1918. (Image1) (Image2)

FORT LARGS: circa 1916 stampless cover endorsed on the reverse "from/Leopold Weste/Prisoner of War", to Adelaide with very fine
strike of the extremely rare '("signature/Capt")/C.O. R.A.G.A. 4th Military District' cachet in violet, repaired flap fault & overall light discolouration. Only four examples recorded; rated RRRRR. Three covers were discovered in 2016 in a family
correspondence. This item was sold at our auction of 28.11.2016 for $1500.
Fort Largs Internment Camp was so small & insignificant that its existence isn't even acknowledged on the Australian Archives website. Given that in 1915 virtually all internees in other States were transferred to the Liverpool/Holdsworthy Camps in
NSW, it seems quite extraordinary that any inmates remained at Fort Largs in May 1916. Presumably it was a transit camp for new internees, on an 'as needs' basis. (Image1) (Image2)

FORT LARGS: 1916 (Sep 8) usage of POW Envelope with the very scarce sans-serif 'CENSORED/RGSands LIEUT COL/GERMAN CONCENTRATION
CAMPS/LIVERPOOL NSW' cachet in violet, to Seppeltsfield Winery with 'GREENOCK/12SE/16/SA' squared-circle backstamp where endorsed "Prisoner of War/Fort Largs", small piece of the flap missing & minor blemishes. Presumably, the addressee had very
recently been interned, supporting the suggestion above that Fort Largs operated on an 'as needs' basis. (Image1) (Image2)

TORRENS ISLAND: 1915 (mid) cover endorsed on the face "Letters from Prisoner of War E Weinkauff/ Torrens Island SA" with light
strike of the extremely rare two-line 'SERVICE de PRISONNIERS/de GUERRE' cachet (recorded by Gary Diffen -.6.1915 to -.8.1915 only; rated RRRRR) and endorsed on the reverse "Civil" in blue over superb '71' cachet in magenta, to the Red Cross in
Switzerland with 'PASSED' handstamp of Adelaide in violet, Geneva arrival backstamp of '12-IX/1915', very minor blemishes. Sold at our auction of 7.2.2009 for $1495. See EFR at page 194, where it is noted that the sender arrived at Torrens Island on
15.1.1915.
Torrens Island was one of the smallest POW Camps, housing some 400 German men. The camp opened in -.10.1914. The commandant, Captain GE Hawkes, encouraged a brutal & oppressive regime that resulted in official complaints & an enquiry. The camp was
closed in 6.08.1915, & all internees were transferred to Holdsworthy NSW. Hawkes was dismissed from the Army. (Image1) (Image2)
