1917 (circa) printed POW Envelope with Exaggerated 'S's & 27mm 'FREE' indicium, endorsed on the flap "[name]Trial Bay", to an
internee (?) in Russia with 'RHolman LIEUT COL/.../LIVERPOOL NSW' & boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR SD' both in violet, German 'Zuruck/...' cachet that roughly translates as 'Service Suspended', boxed 'PRESENT LOCATION/UNCERTAIN' cachet of Sydney (?), large
"fickle finger" inscribed 'RETURN TO SENDER/SEE BACK' & double-ring 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/6AU18/SYDNEY NSW' backstamp, minor toning/soiling. Something of an enigma. Apparently sent (under cover ?) via Britain and then perhaps through the Baltic where
it was intercepted by the Germans. But how then was it returned? "Curiouser and curiouser", said Alice. See EFR at page 157. (Image1) (Image2)

1917 (mid) printed POW Envelope with defective 'FREE' indicium, endorsed on the flap "H Raum Detent Barracks Trial Bay/(E4)" to his
daughter (?) at "Finschhafen/German New Guinea/in Austral Occupation" with faint 'RHolman LIEUT COL/.../LIVERPOOL NSW' & boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR SD' cachets in violet, large German 'Freigegeben/Auslandstelle Coln-Duetz' cachet (= Released by Foreign
Branch at Cologne) in violet, eventually delivered - probably under cover after the war ended - with Australian Occupation black/white 'Passed by Censor' label & '[crown]/PASSED CENSOR/["initials"]/RABAUL' cachet without date in violet, some
gum-staining at left & damp-spotting/toning at right. An important cover. Hans Raum was a Lutheran missionary accused of assisting German officials to escape from Morobe. He was arrested & interned in NSW.
Almost certainly from the New Guinea-bound mails aboard SS 'Matunga' which was captured on 6.8.1917 by the German Raider 'Wolf'. The crew & passengers were landed on an island in Dutch New Guinea, but the ship's five officers and the mails were taken
to Germany. We have sold several of the seven recorded 'Matunga' covers. All were addressed to servicemen; all were opened in Germany, receiving an 'Opened under Military Law' cachet; and all were returned after the war by the Danish Red Cross. This
item was almost certainly handled differently because it was addressed to a German national.
Although there are no dates on this item, we note the following points: 1) the Colonel Holman cachets were introduced from late-1916; 2) the defective 'FREE' indicium is recorded from 21.1.1917; 3) the date was removed from the Rabaul censor cachet
later than '6MAR1918', meaning that this item was received at Rabaul at a later date (see Lot 4865 for an item from the same correspondence with Rabaul handstamp of '4JAN1918'); and 4) and most importantly, the only dated mail with the censor label
we have located was dated in October 1918, five months after all Trial Bay inmates were transferred to Holdsworthy. We suggest that it was forwarded to New Guinea under cover after the war finished. The sum of the evidence is compelling: this must
have been in the seized mail from the 'Matunga'. See EFR at page 162. (Image1) (Image2)

boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR SD' plus seriffed & sans sarif 'CENSORED/ DETENTION BARRACKS/TRIAL BAY NSW' cachets all in violet, endorsed "not known at Trial Bay" in rosine, 'CENSORED/GERMAN CONCENTRATION CAMP/LIVERPOOL' cachet in violet & Major Sands
cachet in blue at lower-left but "not known/Liverpool" and "Try Bourke" in red pencil, "Not at/Bourke" at lower-right, returned to Trial Bay where again endorsed "Not known/at TB" in blue pencil at lower-left, finally endorsed "Berrima", hardly
surprising there are minor blemishes. Ex Oscar Blau Hoard: sold at our auction of 21.11.1995 for $935. A spectacular origin/destination item. The writer, an old friend, states "[I'm told] you have been detained by error...[and] the American
authorities are taking the necessary steps to get you off...", which might explain why Leist was so elusive! See EFR at page 134.
