others to "Ernst Blohfels/Prisoner of War/Concentrations [sic] Camp/Liverpool NSW", the earliest lacking a POW heading from the tiny internment camp at "Kalapahar/near Darjeeling" with KGV ½a x2 tied by 'JALAPAHAR/7APR15' cds, the others with

Artillerist", to "Kurt Baedelt/in Sidney [sic]/Gefangenenlager" (= POW Camp) with Japanese language cds of '6.9.17' on the reverse, censor cachet in rosine & very fine 'han' in scarlet, black/white 'OPENED BY CENSOR' label but no Australian markings.
On Ninoshima Island near Hiroshima, opened in 1917, housing about 550 German soldiers captured at Kiautschou China. See EFR at page 55.

Exhibition, the Chinese characters below = Exhibition of Captives' Art), to "K Bottger/36.5/GCC/Liverpool" with Japanese-language cds of 7.3.27 & huge bilingual censor cachet in rosine, boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR SD' cachet of Sydney in violet. The camp

'LIVERPOOL MILITARY CAMP/4JA16/=NSW=' cds on the face, huge 'UNCLAIMED' cachet in blue & boxed 'REBUT/Non reclamé' cachet in violet, apparently forwarded under cover to England where black/white censor label applied, 'LIVERPOOL/24SE/16/RLO' &
'RETURNED LETTER OFFICE/24FE/16/ LIVERPOOL' cds also on the face, minor bends. Something of an enigma. During WWI, the Dutch were neutral. However, some were mistakenly interned for having "German-sounding" names. The only such item we have

NEW GUINEA: 1917 (Nov 17) plain envelope endorsed on the flap "K Hurking, Rabaul/co New Guinee [sic] Co" with KGV NWPI 1d red
(largely removed by the censor) tied by one of two strikes of the 'RABAUL/-.-' cds, to "Hermann Becker/German Concentration Camp/Liverpool", violet/white 'OPENED BY CENSOR' label of Sydney, unusually with no camp marking but endorsed "22/4" (=
compound & mess), light overall soiling/toning. Ex Julius Blau Hoard: sold at our auction of 21.11.1995 for $522. Karl Hurking was a plantation manager. He had been interned but was paroled & returned to New Guinea to assist with plantation

NORWAY: 1919 (Feb 5) 10o Postal Card from 'VARDO' to a woman at "St Andrews Hotel/Nuwara Eliya (Blackpool)/Ceylon" with very worn
'PASSED/COLOMBO/CENSOR' cachet in violet, 'NUWARA ELIYA/18MR19' cds & redirected to "Camp of Detention/Negombo" then to "German Concentration Camp/Liverpool" but with no evidence of arrival in NSW. The message is a request from the Postassistant at

SINGAPORE: 1915 (Apr 16) stampless Dutch PPC with POW endorsement to "Herrn S Brenneske POW/Commandant Prisoner of War/through
Assistant Censor/Postoffice Singapore/..." with Amsterdam machine, forwarded under cover to NSW with boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR SD' cachet in violet of Sydney, no camp marking but probably sent to Liverpool, small fault at upper-left.
On 27.1.1915, Indian troops in Singapore mutinied against the British. Some Germans interned at Tanglin Barracks joined them. The British had to call on their Japanese & Russian allies to suppress the rebellion! 47 of the mutineers were publicly
