MOLONGLO CONCENTRATION CAMP: 1918 (June 29) illustrated advertising cover for David Jones Department Store (Sydney) to "G Brauns/co
POW Canteen/Molonglo" with KGV Rough Paper 1d red - misplaced '[DJ]/LTD' perfin - tied by 'HELP TO WIN THE WAR/...' slogan of Sydney, largely very fine straight-line 'Censored' handstamp (EFR page 176) apparently used at the Camp. Gary Diffen has
confirmed this is the only recorded example so rated RRRRR.
EFR state the addressee was probably Gertrud Brauns, teenage daughter of the Nauru wireless operator who was interned at Berrima, and whose family lived in that town. (Image1) (Image2)

MOLONGLO CONCENTRATION CAMP: 1918 (Aug 10) usage of Dutch Indies 5c Postal Card from a Dutch naval officer to a female internee at
"St Andrews Hotel/Nuwara Eliya/Ceylon" with superb 38mm 'PASSED/COLOMBO/CENSOR' cachet in violet & endorsed "POW Australia/GCC/Liverpool", no Sydney or Liverpool markings but with 'BERRIMA/OC29/1918/NSW' cds & endorsed "Molonglo Camp" in blue pencil,
minor bends & light soiling. A remarkable item, between members of the Kosmos Correspondence Club. See EFR at page 175. In -.7.1915, the SS Star of England brought 219 German internees from Ceylon to Australia. (Image1) (Image2)

MOLONGLO CONCENTRATION CAMP: 1918 POW Lettersheet headed "Molonglo 27th 8 1918" with 29mm 'PRISONER OF WAR LETTER/FREE' and 70mm
'Nicht zwischen die Zeilen schreiben!' (= do not write between the lines), superb strike of the very scarce 'MOLONGLO CONCENTN CAMP/ 29AU18/NSW' cds (rated RRR by Gary Diffen) & the extremely rare unframed 'CENSORED/LeoGCasey CAPTAIN/INTELLIGENCE
OFFICER AND CENSOR/[MOLONGLO] DEFENCE CAMP' handstamp (EFR page 173; not previously recorded by Gary Diffen so rated RRRRR), to "Liverpool German Concentration Camp" with 'Permission granted' handstamp in violet. Ex Oscar Blau Hoard: sold at our
auction of 21.11.1995 for $800.
This is the only non-civilian internee item we have recorded from Molonglo, being endorsed on the flap "Lt Janis von Blankenstein", challenging the popular belief that only civilian internees were held at Molonglo. The letter is to Oscar Blau in his
capacity as "Lt of the 1st Hung Hon Art Regt" (= 1st Hungarian Honorary Artillery Regiment), requesting Blau send him £10 and stating "...it is not allowed to write from one camp in [sic] the other, only in buisness [sic] matter..." (Image1) (Image2)

BY/CENSOR SD' cachet in purple applied at Sydney, the flap endorsed "Mrs Freudenberg/Concentration Camp Molonglo", Dutch 'GINNEKEN/18.II/1919' arrival backstamp, minor folding splits/repairs within. Rare. See EFR at page 174. Neil Russell's example
from the same correspondence sold for $900 (Sale 217 Lot 543).

MOLONGLO CONCENTRATION CAMP: 1918 usage of KGV Star 1d Envelope uprated with KGV ½d green (paying the War Tax introduced
28.10.1918) tied by two of three very fine to superb strikes of the very scarce 'MOLONGLO CONCENTN CAMP/18NO18/NSW' cds (one week after the Armistice; rated RRR), opened-out. See EFR at page 172. The British-style writing suggests the sender was a
member of the Camp staff. Gary Diffen records the cds between 19JE18 & 7JE19 (the day the PO closed). (Image1) (Image2)

1915-16 correspondence to & from Marguerite Blau, wife of the internee Oscar Blau, regarding her visits to him being permitted or
denied 1) '[crown]/GCC/GERMAN CONCENTRATION CAMPS NSW' letterhead of 16..9.1915 granting permission for fortnightly visits, signed "RSSands Major/Commandant"; 2) of "Oct 18th" to Major Sands advising she had been refused entry to the camp; 3)
'[crown]/GCC/...' letterhead of 3.11.1915, again granting fortnightly visits & signed "RSSands"; 4) similar of 8.12.1915 advising "...owing to special instructions having been received...permission cannot be granted...at present" & signed "OGriffith
Captain/for Commandant"; 5) of 6.1.1916 to "Mr Hughes" (William Morris (Billy) Hughes, Prime Minister 1915-23) asking him to intervene; 6) & 7) 13.1.1916 from the NSW Premier advising it was a matter for the Defence Department, with the OHMS envelope
with 'PREMIERS OFFICE' cachet; 8) of 15.6.1916 (apparently an error for January) to "Your Excellency Sir Munro Ferguson" (Sir Ronald Crauford Munro-Ferguson was Governor-General 1914-20); and 9) 16.1.1916 'GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S OFFICE' letterhead
advising her letter had been "forwarded to the Prime Minister for the consideration of the Government". Marvellous social history, showing that some things never change. In this four-month period, Mrs Blau was resident at Darling Point, Bellevue Hill
and Rose Bay.
