1928 KGV Sideface 2d brown Die I + 3d blue Die I Doubleton ACSC PL1 with decorative borders (115x82mm), used to Albury, NSW affixed
to a piece of cardboard wrapper (trimmed to the same size as the label) with KGV 1d green added tied by Melbourne '30OC28' cds cancels, a small corner fault & 30mm closed tear at lower-left and few minor aging marks, unpriced as no complete labels
recorded. An item of major importance, being the only recorded example of the only pre-World War II parcel label. Until its discovery about eight years ago, the actual format and size was the subject of speculation. Sold at a Sydney auction in 2018
for $18,800.
The ACSC records only two cut-outs, the fine one illustrated at page 403, the other badly damaged. It gives the issue year as "1929" - this example proves the issue was 1928 or earlier - and states that "it is believed that this was printed as a
parcel label for Foy & Gibson catalogues". The printed matter rate was 1d per 4oz; with the uprating this item paid for a catalogue weighing up to 24ozs. (Image1) (Image2)
