1915-30 KGV Sideface 'FIVE/PENCE' Surcharge on 4½d violet ACSC RE23, unused, a couple of tiny marks otherwise very fine unused, Cat
$1500. The ACSC states "This is a rare envelope of which only a small quantity were revalued, presumably returns from post offices". The surcharge appears to be Misplaced Downwards, but this is the case on all examples as the overprint was designed
to fit the KGV Oval Die. Virtually identical to Mark Diserio's example that sold at our auction of 3.10.2017 for $1680. (Image1) (Image2)

added tied by Perth '25AUG31' cds cancels and blue & black/white 'R' label alongside, 'HOLSTEBRO/28.9.31' cds arrival backstamp, minor opening faults at left. On 4.8.1930 the domestic letter rate was increased from 1½d to 2d per 1oz, and existing
stocks were overprinted. The rate was 3d up to 1oz foreign letter plus 3d registration fee; the ½d over-payment presumably occurred because the sender did not take the surcharge into account. (Image1) (Image2)

indicium and twice more on the face of the envelope, central pin-hole where affixed to a display and the flap stuck-down. Unrecorded by the ACSC. No doubt this item formed part of a display of current stamps and postal stationery, presumably at the
Melbourne GPO, as did Lot 1345 above. Andrew Johnston's KGV ½d orange stamp with a similar handstamp in black - which may well have been part of the same display - sold at our auction of 19.9.2023 for $3186 (Sale 253 Lot 243). See also Lot 1345. (Image1) (Image2)
