4656 PSE image1914-38 KGV Sideface ½d green without 'NEWSPAPER ONLY' Heading ACSC W3, to England with Queenscliff, Vic 1917 cds cancel with the additional franking affixed at lower-right apparently having fallen off, endorsed "Above 24oz, 13/120" at upper-left and Melbourne 'T'-in-oval cachet endorsed "C/110" on the face, on arrival British '1/- I.S/R' handstamp applied and Postage Dues 2d two strips of 3 affixed tied by 'HASTINGS' cds cancels, minor faults & light aging marks. The British Empire (non NZ/Pacific destinations) printed matter rate was 1d per 4oz, so the item required 7d postage; it appears ½d credit was given for the missing franking, and the item taxed as 6d underpaid. 4659 PSE image1914-38 KGV Sideface ½d green + ½d green Doubleton with 'NEWSPAPER/ONLY' Type 1 (Large Seriffed Letters in Two Lines) Handstamp in Blue-Green ACSC W8(1), used to the USA with KGV ½d green added tied by Sydney '11JA21' cds cancels, a couple of minor blemishes, under-catalogued at $100. Very scarce: these handstamps were applied by the Post Office as a provisional measure after the decision was made to limit the use of wrappers to newspapers only, and before wrappers with the 'NEWSPAPER ONLY' headings were issued. The ACSC states that the Type 1 Handstamp was used at Melbourne, so it is unusual to see this example used from Sydney. The rate was 1½d per 4ozs to the USA (an exception to the normal foreign rate of 1½d per 2ozs). (Image1) (Image2)

4672 PSE image1915-38 KGV Sideface 1d red Die II ACSC WS9 on very thin paper, used locally with Sydney '17DE20' cds cancel just clear of the Die II Spur, a little minor creasing not affecting the value indicium, Cat $2000. The ACSC states that "the Die 2 electros saw limited usage ... towards the end of the period in 1920-21, and examples are rare". This is an early usages, and may be the earliest recorded date of a Die II Stamped-to-Order wrapper. Almost certainly printed for the Sydney Stock Exchange; see the next Lot. (Image1) (Image2)
