of their factory & warehouse with automobiles out the front surrounded by a spray of Wattle flowers on the face and 'Advance Australia' Kangaroo & Emu Coat of Arms on the reverse all in grey, used 1920 registered to the USA with KGV ½d green & 4d
orange with Line through 'FOUR PENCE' tied by Goulburn cds and red/white R label, Sydney transit and San Francisco arrival backstamps, a couple of closed tears mostly on the reverse & a few minor blemishes hardly detract from the facial appearance.
Stunning. The rate was 3d per ½oz foreign letter plus 3d registration fee (on 1.10.1920 the foreign letter was increased from 2½d to 3d per ½oz, but the ½d War Tax was abolished, so the effective rate remained at 3d for the first ½oz). Ex Stephen

at base, Cat $1000. The ACSC states "The first printing of 1,000 envelopes on 12 May 1916 was on stock similar to that used for Post Office envelopes. This has given rise to the belief that [it] was sold at post offices, but ... this is not correct.

ST VIC' cds cancel being the earliest recorded date of use, 'P.T. BERRY' cachet on the reverse endorsed "Just out, first printing, Die Cut in Melbourne, PT Berry", a couple of minor blemishes, Cat $500. The ACSC states that "Archival records indicate
it [this embossing die] was probably used for a single printing of 1000 envelopes on 12 May 1916 [clearly an error]... An example is known used at Rialto (Vic) on 11 May 1916. Now there are two examples that prove the printing must have been earlier.

Melbourne office, used 1921 to Scotland with the flap at left unsealed and Melbourne '22DE/1921' machine cancel, light vertical fold clear of the value indicium & some minor blemishes, Cat $7500. The rate was 1d per 2oz British Empire printed matter.
Extremely rare: approval to include the word 'POSTAGE' on the 1d 'Star' Die was given in September 1921, at a time when the domestic letter rate was 2d per ½oz. The 1d denomination was intended for the printed matter rate, and the colour was changed
