1911 KGV Fullface 1d red 'The left half ...' New Layout ACSC P23 used by Australian serviceman on the First Convoy headed "HMT
Miltiades, 31st October 1914" to British Prisoner of War "Sergeant John Egan, "B" Coy, 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers, (The Old Dirty Shirts), British Field Force, Berlin, Germany", the message including "We have been mobilised since August 9. I hope to
be with you soon ... Have only seen officers casualty list so far: I hope both your brothers are among the gallant 240.", not postmarked or censored in Australia or en route until a 'LONDON/DEC 11 14' machine cancel was applied on the face with
British 'POST FREE/ * P.C. * /PRISONER OF WAR' circular censor cachet alongside, on arrival 'Nicht in Döberitz.' [Not in ...] boxed cachet in rosine on the face and endorsed "Nicht ermittlet" [Not delivered] in indelible pencil, two corners trimmed
off, minor bends & blemishes. An important item - possibly the only item of mail addressed to Germany from the First Convoy - and still presentable despite the faults.
The transport ship 'Miltiades' was part of the first convoy of Australian troops to Egypt, which left King George's Sound, Albany, WA early in the morning of 1.11.1014, the day after this card was written. Until February 1915, mail from Australian
troops was subject to payment of postage. On 27.8.1914, after the Battle of Mons, the Munsters were given the task of defending the British retreat. Their day-long rear-guard action kept the Germans at bay and allowed their division to escape, but
cost them 9 officers and 87 other ranks killed, with most of the rest of the battalion being surrounded and taken prisoner after running out of ammunition. (Image1) (Image2)

the reverse, used 1913 to Five Dock, NSW with small-part Sydney machine cancel, some blemishes & light overall aging, Cat $1000. Rare: the ACSC states that these are believed to derive from a small quanity of cards included with Kangaroo 1d cards
sent for puncturing. As the earlier 'ADDRESS ONLY ...' card was not released in NSW, this is the earliest possible 'OS/NSW' perfin on an Australian Postal Card. Sold at our auction of 19.6.2015 for $900 (Sale 205 Lot 399). John Sinfield's similar
card - minor corner bend - sold at our auction of 8.11.2013 for $1840 (Sale 186 Lot 2027). These are the only two examples we have offered.

Capt RA Austin MC enlisted on 20.3.1916, and qualified as a first class pilot from the Aeronautics School, Abbassia, Egypt in March 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross for taking photographs of the enemy lines under fire. On 19.3.1918, he was
escorting a bombing raid on the railway at Kutrani, Palestine. On the return flight, he landed in the desert to assist a grounded pilot, but damaged his machine and was unable to take off. The two pilots burnt their machines and headed south along
the Dead Sea on foot, but were captured by Arabs near Kerah and handed over to the Turks. After being transported via Amman and Damascus to Istanbul, they were held in the Turkish Prisoner of War camp at Afion until liberated. With a typed transcript
of his statement. A most important item. (Image1) (Image2)
