2433 c image1840 (Sept) outer from the Ionian Islands with 'CEPHALONIA' scrolled-oval datestamp to London rated "3d" in red at upper-right for the ship re-directed to Edinburgh and subsequently to Wick with very fine 'POSTAGE NOT PAID/TO LONDON' handstamp in red over the despatch marking apparently where rated "1/-" inland delivery, light but clear 'POSTAGE/TO/EDINBURGH/NOT PAID' unframed marking at left where re-rated "1/1"[d] payable all on the face, London & Edinburgh transit backstamps, very fine. The 1815 Treaty of Paris ending the Napoleonic Wars awarded Great Britain a protectorate over the Ionian Islands, which they ceded to Greece in 1864. See Lot 2249 above for an explanation of the 'Postage Not Paid' markings that were used only at London, Edinburgh & Dublin. Remarkably, this item bears two of the three types. (Image1) (Image2)
