complete strike of the rare 'TOO LATE BY/CARLISLE' boxed handstamp in black presumably indicating that the item was received after the Carlisle coach had departed, Scottish 'Add'l/½' wheel tax unboxed cachet on the face and Manchester ' Z/M
/MAR/5/1831' arrival backstamp, originally rated "1/2½"[d] for 400-500 miles including wheel tax but this was amended to "2/4½"[d] when found to be over ½oz and liable to double postage, light filing folds & minor soiling at the edges clear of the
markings. Graham Hayward states that he found references to only three examples of this marking being recorded, two in black & one in red.

the ship re-directed to Edinburgh and subsequently to Wick with very fine 'POSTAGE NOT PAID/TO LONDON' handstamp in red over the despatch marking apparently where rated "1/-" inland delivery, light but clear 'POSTAGE/TO/EDINBURGH/NOT PAID' unframed
marking at left where re-rated "1/1"[d] payable all on the face, London & Edinburgh transit backstamps, very fine. The 1815 Treaty of Paris ending the Napoleonic Wars awarded Great Britain a protectorate over the Ionian Islands, which they ceded to
Greece in 1864. See Lot 2249 above for an explanation of the 'Postage Not Paid' markings that were used only at London, Edinburgh & Dublin. Remarkably, this item bears two of the three types. (Image1) (Image2)
