face, docketed "Recd 7th Aprl 1841" also on the face, a few minor edge faults. From 5.12.1839, the outgoing private ship letter rate was 8d. Captain Barnes was a member of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, stationed in South Africa 1840-1842. See

"Gort 20th/4/1942" [Ireland] but posted in England, rated "8"[d] in red with 'WINCHESTER/AP22/184[ ]' unframed cds at upper-right, London 'PAID' rounded-corner box & 'PAID SHIP LETTER' crowned-oval datestamps in red on the face, re-directed to the
regiment at "H.M. / Arnee" [India] and rated a further "4"[d] payable with 'POONAMALLE' boxed handstamp arrival in blue on the reverse, minor edge faults & light overall soiling. Captain Barnes was a member of the King's Own Scottish Borderers,
stationed in South Africa 1840-1842 and India 1843-52. Poonamalle(e), 20km outside Madras (Chennai), was a British garrison town for much of the 19th century. The letter (transcript enclosed) states in part "This unexpected alteration to your
destination is a great nuisance, but under the unhappy defeat at Cabool (Kabul), it could not be helped", referring to the disastrous British retreat in the First Anglo-Afghan War that required fresh troops to be brought to India. See also the
