1885 (March 20) Returned Letter Office GPO London OHMS 'Returned Paid Letter' envelope with 'Paid' crossed out, to Eastbourne with
'REGISTERED/RETD LT BCH' oval datestamp in red on the face overstruck with 'Regn Fee/2d' tax marking, large-part GPO label 'This letter contains value, it has [been] registered ... for the better security of the contents and charged the authorised
registration fee of 2d' on the reverse, minor adhesion marks on the face & small-part label removed. The letter was found to contain valuables, and instread of being compulsorily registered & delivered (or perhaps found to be undeliverable), it was

at upper-right, largely very fine 'CHRISTIANA/27/5' arrival backstamp, the back flap missing and a few minor blemishes. Apparently intended as a single-weight letter at the 2½d UPU rate, the other stamps were added when it was found to weigh over

Russell Square with QV Jubilee 3d purple/yellow solo tied by 'E.C./2' vertical oval-of-bars cancel and 'REGISTERED/LONDON CHIEF OFFICE' oval datestamp in red alongside, a couple of minor blemishes. The caricature was designed to bring attention to
the poor working conditions of postmen, which had led to a Postal Strike that same year. Only around 20 contemporarily used examples are recorded (this item not listed), of which only two others are registered. (Image1) (Image2)

reverse, London 'E.C/2' oval-of-bars cancel, 'REGISTERED/LONDON CHIEF OFFICE E.C.' oval datestamp below, large 'R'-in-oval at upper-left and crossed by blue lines, Hannover arrival datestamp of the next day also on the face, minor spotting & light
transmission marks. The 3d postal card was intended to pay the 'Overland via Suez & Alexandria' ship letter route to Australia & New Zealand, for which it remained current until both joined the UPU on 1.10.1891. In this case it was most unusally used
