showing the firm's Redditch premises to France with 'REDDITCH' despatch backstamp, QV Line-Engraved Letters 2d blue horizontal strip of 6 [FG-FL] tied by very fine to superb continuous strike of the Birmingham Numeral '75' Roller cancel showing six
numerals, London 'PD' [Paid to Destination] circular cachet in red and French 'ANGL./AMB. CALAIS H' maritime marking both on the face, minor soiling & repaired internal faults. The rate was 4d per ¼oz x3. Spectacular. Graham Hayward states that the
roller cancel was "mostly used on parcels" and "is a scarce postmark. It was entered in the proof book ... in August 1856. Parmenter records use to March 1859, this cover is more than two years later. Dated examples are very rare". (Image1) (Image2)

outer to New York endorsed "p Canada" with QV Embossed 1/- green vertical pair (cut-square; margins large to just touching at right of upper unit; Cat £1900 for a single on cover) with slightly untidy Numeral '466' cancels, very fine 'PAID' curved
cachet in red tying one of the adhesives and very fine '5/CENTS' accountancy handstamp below both in red, light folds clear of the adhesives & a few hinge remainders on reverse slightly affecting the backstamp. The Receiving House was set up in 1849
on the landing stage for departing Trans-Atlantic steamers to allow mail to be posted close to departure for an additional 1/- late fee.

Liverpool - Landing Stage: 'LIVERPOOL/AP 21/04/LANDING STAGE' framed cds two largely very fine strikes tying KEVII 2½d blue and 1/-
green & red on envelope (Cat £175 on cover) to Senegal endorsed "per SS Dahomey", receiver's endorsement on reverse alongside 'GOREE/8/MAI/04/SENEGAL' arrival backstamp, a few minor marks on the face. The rate was 2½d foreign letter plus 1/- late
fee. This office replaced the Floating Receiving House (see previous lot). Graham Hayward states that "The Landing Stage Office opened in 1879 and closed in 1955. Covers bearing the Landing Stage cancels are rare, even though there was a long period

otherwise fine to very fine. A very scarce assembly. Graham Hayward states that "Arundel records the Liverpool Posted Since date-stamp as being used from March 1856 to October 1861. Some historians have stated that the stamp had interchangeable time
slugs ... it seems more likely that the figure 8 was cut down to make a 9".
