LETTER/INWARDS FREE/20MR20/1872' diamond in red on the reverse, minor partially-repaired edge faults. The rate via Brindisi was 9d per ½oz plus 1d late fee; the Victorian outward ship letter rate was 3d in addition to postage (which had already been

(Ceylon) 12.6.1872; by 'Surat' arriving Suez (Egypt) 2.7.1872, overland to Alexandria; and by 'Nyanza' arriving Brindisi (Italy) 7.7.1872.

1873 (Dec 5) envelope to Middlesex England endorsed "via Brindisi" with QV Bell 9d brown plus 2d violet x6 added later and
plastered all around the first all tied by six slightly untidy strikes of the first 'R.M.S.S./ T / HOBSONS BAY - VICTORIA' duplex cancel, Twickenham transit & Tedington arrival backstamps, some repaired edge faults & light soiling. A late usage of
the duplex. Ex Roy Holland. Carried by P&O 'Bangalore' departing Melbourne 5.12.1873, 'Mirzapore' from Galle, and 'Simla' from Alexandria arriving Brindisi 15.1.1874. The rate was 9d shipletter via Brindisi plus 1/- late fee to carry the letter to
the mail ship immediately prior to departure. Intially, in July 1864, a late fee of 2/- was imposed (no cover known), but this was halved to 1/- in September 1865. Molnar & Waugh state at p151 that this service "operated for twenty-five years but
only seven covers have been recorded" (plus another recently discovered in a collection of Melbourne duplex cancels). Les Molnar's 1870 cover via Marseilles at the 10d rate plus 1/- late fee - sold at our auction of 3.4.2017 for $1800 (Sale 220 Lot

1883 (Dec 4) envelope from England addressed to ship's passenger on board "SS Orient, Naples, Italy" with QV Surface-Printed 2½d
blue tied by London squared-circle datestamp, received after the ship had departed and redirected care of a forwarding agent at Port Said, Egypt endorsed "Via Vrindisi" with Alexandria '13DE83' arrival backstamp and 'W. STAPLEDON/15.DEC.83/PORT-SAID'
handstamp in violet alongside, again unable to be delivered and redirected to Melbourne with 'JA 24/84' arrival backstamp where taxed with largely very fine ' 6D / MORE TO PAY' oval cachet on the face, delivery attempted with Letter Carrier 'L.C.
7(?)/JA 25/1884' oval datestamp also on the face but apparently unsuccessful as 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/JL 29/84/MELBOURNE' cds applied on the reverse, some light soiling/aging. (Image1) (Image2)

'WILLIAMSTOWN/VICTORIA' unframed cds, Melbourne transit of the same day on the reverse, four different Bombay arrivals of 29.11.1884 including 'FOURTH DELY' and 'ENQU. DEPT' semi-circle on the reverse, then re-directed with 'THIRD DELY/KARACHI/3 DEC
84' backstamp, minor transmission marks & edge faults from bulky contents (with the enclosed three-page letter). Ex John Barwis. The rate was 6d ship letter paid to destination. Carried by P&O 'Parramatta' departing Melbourne 6.11.1884 arriving
Colombo, Ceylon 25.11.1884 and onwards by coastal steamer. A scarce destination: Ben Palmer's Census India #23 of only 26 items. (Image1)

red/yellow added tied by 'EAST MELBOURNE/VIC - MCCC/14' duplex cancels, carried by Bavarian Travelling Post Office with 'K.B.BAHNPOST/17/AUG/91' transit & Berlin '18.8.91' arrival both on the face, a few minor blemishes. Scarce proper uprating to the
letter rate in the pre-UPU period (there being no reduced postcard rate except to the United Kingdom). The Australian Colonies joined the UPU on 1.10.1891, on which date the 1½d foreign postcard rate was introduced. (Image1) (Image2)
