1849 (Feb 1) entire letter headed "Lamplough Pyrenees/1st Feby 1848" (error for '1849') " and signed "Mark P Stoddart", to the "CC
[= Commissioner for Crown] Lands for District of Western Port" at Melbourne endorsed "Paid" at top and "via Mt Macedon coaches" at base in a different ink, largely fine 'PAID AT/MELBOURNE' bevelled-boxed handstamp in red and largely very fine
crowned-oval 'MELBOURNE/ FE*8/1849/PORT PHILLIP' arrival backstamp, initially rated "6"[d] in red but crossed-out and re-rated "1"[d] for a town letter, ironed-out vertical filing folds & minor blemishes. Ex Max Watson & Brian Peace: sold at our
auction of 27.7.2009 for $529 (Sale 148 Lot 1195). An intriguing item. Lamplough is 170km NW of Melbourne, so the original 6d rating (for an inland letter between 21 to 30 miles) was insufficient. From the endorsement at base, it is clear that the
letter was carried to Melbourne outside the mails, in contravention of the post office monopoly, but still accepted as a drop letter. Had it been endorsed "OHMS", it would have been allowed to pass free of postage by virtue of the addressee. (Image1) (Image2)

1852 (Oct 2) entire letter headed "72 Collins St East, Melbourne, Victoria" endorsed "Ship Letter", to London with light Melbourne
'PAID' crowned datestamp in red on the face, London '18MR18/1853' arrival backstamp where redirected to Paris, the 'PAID' marking crossed out in red pencil, the original "1/-" rating crossed out in black ink and re-rated "1/5"[d] with largely very
fine complete strike of 'POSTAGE TO LONDON/NOT PAID' boxed handstamp in red on the face, carried by ship to France with largely very fine French 'LIGNE-DE-CALAIS/20.MARS/53/ No2 ' transit cds backstamp where rated "90"[centimes] to pay, light
vertical fold mostly clear of the markings & minor soilng mostly on the inside. Ex Graham Hayward.
It is unclear why the letter was not carried by the P&O 'Formosa' steamer that departed Melbourne 15.11.1852 on a non-contract service at the 6d ship letter rate paid, the mails from which arrived in England on 21.1.1853. It was instead held for the
Australian Royal Mail Steam Navigation Company 'Sydney' contract service departing 11.12.1852 arriving 16.3.1853. Not only did it arrive two months later than the earlier service, but was underpaid for the contract 1/- packet letter rate and thus
treated as wholly unpaid. (Image1)

1852 (late) outer from Great Britain to "Melbourne, Port Phillip" with a very fine complete strike of the larger 'FORWARDED BY/JB
WILCOCKS/SHIPPING & EMIGRATION/AGENT/PLYMOUTH' framed-oval handstamp on the face, carried per favor and placed into the mails on arrival where rated "3"[d] postage due and largely fine 'SHIP LETTER/MA*17/1853/MELBOURNE' crowned datestamp in red on
the reverse, ironed-out folds one lightly affecting the handstamp. Plus Wilcocks circular advertising services to migrants to 'the Australian Colonies, Van Dieman's Land, New Zealand, China, Cape of Good Hope, Canada, United States of America, etc,
etc ... Agent to the South Australia Company, the India and Australian Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, etc, etc'. James B Wilcocks was the most successful of seven emigration agents in Plymouth. His efforts, funded by the South Australian
government, contributed to the disproportionately high levels of migration from Devon & Cornwall. The large cachet is much scarcer than the earlier unframed type: see Lots 751 and 752 under South Australia.

A very scarce destination in this period. Not listed in Ben Palmer's Census, and more than three years earlier than the first item he records to the Cape. Piketberg is about 120km NNE of Cape Town. (Image1) (Image2)
