1841 entire mourning letter headed "Melbourne Jan 8th 1841 and signed "W Langhorne", to London "per Deva" with very fine
'bevelled-box 'PAID AT/MELBOURNE' handstamp in red and on the reverse one of the finest recorded strikes of the undated 'MELBOURNE/NSW' implement partly overstruck with British 'SHIP-LETTER' handstamp & London arrival cds of '9MY9/1842' in red, light
soiling and light vertical filing fold clear of the 'MELBOURNE/NSW' handstamp. Ray Kelly's 14.1.1840 entire letter with the finest strike of the circular handstamp sold at our auction of 22.4.2006 for $9320 (Sale 121 Lot 430).
Interesting mercantile content: "...I regret...I am not in a position to honour [a debt] our House having been involved in the universal commercial Panic which has seized this place in common with Sydney and the rest of the Australian Colonies...we
confidently hope speedily to meet our engagements...All the old Houses here have failed & most of the wealthy settlers are completely ruined...the resources of this county are so unbounded I think we must soon recover..." No mention of anyone dying
so perhaps the mourning stationery was a symbol of the ruined economy. (Image1) (Image2)

1849 (Feb 1) entire letter headed "Lamplough Pyrenees/1st Feby 1848" (error for "1849") " and signed "Mark P Stoddart", to the "CC
[= Crown Commissioner] Lands for District of Western Port" at Melbourne endorsed "Paid" at top and "via Mt Macedon coaches" at base in a different ink, largely fine 'PAID AT/MELBOURNE' bevelled-boxed handstamp in red and largely very fine
crowned-oval 'MELBOURNE/ FE*8/1849/PORT PHILLIP' arrival backstamp, initially rated "6"[d] in red but crossed-out and re-rated "1"[d] for a town letter, ironed-out vertical filing folds & minor blemishes. Ex Max Watson & Brian Peace: sold at our
auction of 27.7.2009 for $529 (Sale 148 Lot 1195). An intriguing item: Lamplough is 170km NW of Melbourne, so the original 6d rating (for an inland letter between 21 to 30 miles) was insufficient. From the endorsement at base, it is clear that the
letter was carried to Melbourne outside the mails, in contravention of the post office monopoly, but still accepted as a drop letter. Had it been endorsed "OHMS", it would have been allowed to pass free of postage by virtue of the addressee. (Image1) (Image2)

ship letter rate but endorsed "Charge this letter 9d it is from Melbourne Loose per Steamer" and re-rated "9"[d], superb crowned-oval 'GEELONG/FE*13/1849/PORT PHILLIP' transit backstamp but with no arrival marking, light horizontal filing-fold clear
of the marking & endorsements. Ex Dale Forster: sold at our auction of 1.3.2023 for $660 (Sale 250 Lot 1203). An outstanding Port Phillip District cover, bearing the only such pre-stamp manuscript endorsement we have seen from any of the Australian
Colonies. Bunnenyong PO was renamed Buninyong 17.1.1859, but this alternate spelling was in use much earlier. The addressee, Thomas Learmonth Jnr and his brothers were important early pastoralists in the Port Phillip District, taking up the
'Boninyong' Run in 1838. Henry & Robert Langlands established Melbourne's first iron foundry in 1842. They fabricated the boiler for Australia's first train, launched the first iron-hulled vessel, and made the pipes for Melbourne's water supply. (Image1) (Image2)
