701 c image1840 (Oct 16) entire letter to London endorsed "per Mary Hay" with fine strike of the huge oval 'GENERAL [crown] POST OFFICE/HOBART TOWN/VDL/16OC16/1840' datestamp (Hardinge Primitive (iv); rated RR) in black, the reverse with British straight-line 'SHIP LETTER' handstamp and London arrival cds of '12MR12/1841' in red, a few blemishes & small part back flap missing not affecting the markings. Ex John Barwis: sold at our auction of 7.4.2019 for $448 (Sale 234 Lot 971). Although recorded in use 1840-46, this datestamp is known in black during 1840 only. From 1841 it was struck exclusively in red. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6) (Image7) (Image8) (Image9)

702 c image1843 (Aug 19) part-entire letter to London "Per Eudoria/Augst 28/1843" rated "5" (faint) with fine strike of the half-circle 'PAID/29AU29/1843' datestamp unusually in red, British straightline 'SHIPLETTER' handstamp across the flap, rated "8" for an incoming shipletter & with London arrival backstamp of '13JA13/1844' in red, light central filing fold and minor blemishes. Ex Colonel Harrie Evans: sold at our auction of 4.5.2002 for $560. Malcolm Groom recorded the 'PAID datestamp in black to 4DE4/1840 and only one example in red, of 25NO25/1845. The part-letter signed "Gregory Bateman/Chaplain of Oatlands & Jericho" states "...box of seeds...the Porter...can bring it away without its being opened by the Customs House Officers..." (little has changed in almost 200 years). Rev Gregory Bateman was something of an activist and opponent of the death penalty. Colonial chaplains were obliged to tend to condemned men and, after one execution, Bateman publicly washed his hands at the gallows and declared he was "innocent of the man's blood". He was dismissed for crossing the line between Church and State relations. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

Ex Dr Owen Ingles: stated to be the earliest known usage of the word "Registered" on VDL private mail - until 1853, the term was used interchangeably with "Money Letter" - to combat thefts from the mails. 708 c image1851 entire letter headed "Adelaide July 19th 1851" and signed "BR Leake" to his sister at "Rosedale/Campbell Town/Van Diemens Land" apparently carried per favor by ship with very fine 'LAUNCESTON/1AU1/1851' transit backstamp and largely superb strike of the postmaster's private 'C'TOWN/1.AUG.51' arrival handstamp on the face, rated "5" in black for an incoming shipletter but overwritten "6" in red for an additional 1d for inland delivery, two light ironed-out vertical folds hardly detract from the very fine appearance. Rare format of the 'C TOWN' marking, this being the latest of only four recorded examples. Sold at our auction of 27.7.2009 for $2680 (Sale 147 Lot 403). John Leake arrived in the Colony in May 1823. He was granted 2000 acres near Campbell Town, which he named Rosedale. Two of his sons took up property at Glenroy SA, near the Victorian border.
