1849 (March 1) entire letter headed "Sneizort, Crawford River/Portland District" to Superintendent Charles La Trobe with largely
very fine strike of the scarce rounded-boxed 'FREE/PORTLAND' handstamp (#F17) in red, part crowned-ovals 'PORTLAND/NEW S.WALES' & 'MELBOURNE/PORT PHILLIP' backstamps. Ex JRW Purves and Brian Peace: sold for $2795 (Sale 148 Lot 1223). The letter from
Hector Macdonald and Kenneth Mackenzie complains of sheep being allowed to run amok on their property (at Hotspur, 30 miles north of Portland) for 2½ years. The Crawford River Winery today occupies part of the Sneizort 'run' (= a sheep station). (Image1) (Image2)

the letter signed "JL von Stieglitz" and headed "Ballan" but carried privately to Melbourne where rated "1" as a 'drop letter' & with fine crowned-oval 'MELBOURNE/ MA*22/1849/PORT PHILLIP' backstamp, minor soiling & and a few light aging marks. Ex
Brian Peace: sold at our auction of 7.5.2013 for $437 (Sale 180 Lot 440). Brothers John Lewis & Robert von Stieglitz were among the earliest settlers in the Port Phillip District, taking up sheep runs at Geelong & Ballan. The goldmining town of
Steiglitz is named after them (but note the misspelling). The letter objects to a claim that encroaches on their property at "... the head of the Weeriby ..." (Werribee River). (Image1) (Image2)

Superintendent/Melbourne" endorsed "Free" at top and "On Her Majesties Service" [sic] at base, the reverse with fine crowned-oval 'BUNNENYONG/AP*24/1849/PORT PHILLIP' & Melbourne arrival, some soiling & repaired lower-right corner. Bunnenyong PO
1.1.1845; renamed Buninyong 17.1.1859. Ex Rod Moreton and Brian Peace: sold at our auction of 27.7.2009 for $299 (Sale 148 Lot 1219). James Carmichael arrived in Port Phillip in 1839, and in 1842 was granted a lease of Union Station at Woolsthorpe in
the Western District. His letter objects to recent leases being granted that encroach upon his land. This item must have been carried privately 150km NW to Bunnenyong where it was put into the mails. (Image1) (Image2)

& on the reverse very fine strikes of 'BARWON/PT PHILLIP' & 'GEELONG/PORT PHILLIP' crowned-oval datestamps, rated "d6" in red for carriage between 21 & 30 miles, minor blemishes. Ex Ray Kelly - sold at our auction of 19.7.2003 for $2800 (Sale 104 Lot

121 Lot 443) and Kevin Burt: sold for $5360 (Sale 173 Lot 700). Munro's Inn PO opened 1.1.1849; renamed Border Post circa -.12.1849. No datestamp has been recorded. This is almost certainly the finest of only six covers recorded bearing the

1850 QV Half-Lengths Thomas Ham Printings Third State of Dies (Framelines Added) 1d dull rose SG 9b strip of 5 from the left-hand
side of the sheet with large margin at left, other margins close to touching, the right-hand unit cut-into at base, three largely very fine strikes pf Barred Oval '5' cancel of Sandhurst (Bendigo) and partial London arrival datestamp in red across
the two left-hand units, a few small closed tears and other minor faults hardly detract from the fine facial appearance, Cat £1000+ for singles. John Barwis states at page 67 that "The largest known multiples are four used strips of 6". His strip of
