1806 (Oct 7) entire letter signed "Geo P Harris, Hobart Town, VDL", to Charles Edward Cox Esq, Holborn, London with light 'Penny
Post/Unpaid/...' oval in red on the face overstruck by large '2'[d] to pay handstamp and London '7 o'Clock/[ ]NO/1807 N.T' arrival backstamp, two vertical filing folds otherwise remarkably fine. Carried privately to England and posted there, prior
to the establishment of local postal services. Ex Dr Owen Ingles. This may be the earliest known letter from Van Diemen's Land in private hands.
George Prideaux Robert Harris was appointed Deputy Surveyor to David Collins when the latter was sent out in 1803 to form a settlement at Port Phillip. In 1804, the Sorrento settlement was abandoned for lack of fresh water. Harris followed Collins to
Van Diemen's Land and recommended settlement of the cove on which Hobart now stands. The next year, he was granted 100 acres at Sandy Bay and established a farm there. By 1808, he was suffering the onset of epilepsy, which ultimately led to his death
in 1810 at the age of around 35. The letter talks of appointing an agent as "... no private bills whatever will be taken in future in this Colony, and I should therefore be quite destitute ... I have already lost above £900 by not having one". The
earliest known private letter from the Colony is one written by Matthew Bowden on 17.10.1805 also from Hobart Town to the same addressee, which is held by the National Library of Australia. (Image1) (Image2)
