1877 handpainted stamp-size artwork for an unadopted QV design inscribed 'STAMP DUTY TASMANIA/[queen]/ONE PENNY' in purple-brown &
China white on thin card (28x31½mm) endorsed "22MAR77" at upper-right. Beautiful, superb and unique. Ex De La Rue Archives - illustrated by Frank Walton at page 6291 - and Francis & Charles Kiddle. The design was abandoned only three days later when
De La Rue was advised that the new stamps should feature a platypus. It appears that the frame and border were added to a die proof of the Queen's head. (Image1) (Image2)
