1886 QV De La Rue Provisional Surcharges inscribed 'TASMANIA/POSTAGE & REVENUE/TWO SHILLINGS/ AND SIXPENCE' on Colonial Keyplate
with Blank Tablets in doubly-fugitive violet ink on Wmk 'TAS' paper, a couple of uneven perfs - one pulled - at left, & '.../10 SHILLINGS' (overprint only) on stamp-size piece endorsed "doubly/fugitive/green" both affixed to a copy page (204x330mm)
from the printers' records to the Crown Agents providing "...a specimen of a temporary...stamp produced in the manner you suggest, and...a proof of the lettering to be overprinted on the 10s stamp...", both items are very fine, the page with several
folds.
The Colonial Agents requisitioned stamps of these values from De La Rue. However, in 1882 Tasmania had authorised postal use of revenue stamps printed in the Colony. Hobart advised the Crown Agents that the proposed stamps would be "useless". They
were printed & despatched nevertheless, but were never issued: see Eaton at pages 431-436. Not illustrated by Frank Walton. (Image1) (Image2)
