254 Lot 2159). From -.2.1874, the trans-Pacific rate was reduced from 8d to 6d per ½oz. West Virginia was created during the Civil War, when Union supporters in the west of Confederate Virginia broke-away in 1863 to form a new State. In all periods,

and largely very fine 'SEMAPHORE' framed cds alongside, Adelaide GPO transit backstamp and 'SAN FRANCISCO CAL/DEC 2/REC'D' arrival cds (tying the stamp) where very fine 'U.S. CHARGE/TO COLLECT/5 CENTS' applied on the face for the incoming steamship

message on the reverse and QV De La Rue 2d orange & 3d olive tied by 'PT ADELAIDE' squared circle cancels, carried by train from Switzerland into Germany with German Travelling Post Office 'FRANKFURT (MAIN)-BASEL/BAHNPOST/ZUG 4/18.[1].88' oval
transit and 'BEVENSEN' arrival backstamp of the next day, light vertical fold & minor aging marks. A scarce use of a Postal Card intended for domestic addresses only. There was no concessional postcard rate to destinations other than Great Britain
until after the Colony joined the UPU on 1.10.1891, so the prevailing 6d per ½oz ship letter rate applied. (Image1) (Image2)
