571 c image1838 partly cross-written entire letter headed "Adelaide/April 29 1838" & signed "RLeake", to "John Leake Esqr/Rosedale/near Campbell Town/Van Diemans Land" & endorsed "pAntelope" (?), light but largely fine & above-average strike of the undated double-circle 'POST OFFICE/[lion & crown]/ADELAIDE' handstamp, landed at Launceston & endorsed "9" for inland postage. A very early inter-colonial letter. Sold at our auction of 27.7.2009 for $7280 (Sale 147 Lot 384). Eight months earlier than Harry Lower's and Don Pearce's earliest entire letters that sold for $5060 (Sale 128 Lot 306) and $3660 (Sale 254 Lot 2001) respectively, which makes this an extremely important item. Those other two items were Congregational Church correspondence to London. The current item is inter-colonial which, again, reinforces its importance. The handstamp is recorded from March 1838, underlining the significance of this usage only one month later (with only one earlier usage recorded, of 5.4.1838). However, Don Pearce discovered a note in the Archives dated "16 Sept 1837" & signed "Thomas Gilbert/Post Master", suggesting that it be "returned to Sydney" for the inscription to be amended to add 'SOUTH AUSTRALIA'. No action was taken. Don's transcript is included with the lot. This, plus the similar Port Adelaide and Glenelg devices (the latter known only from a single example in the Archives), were manufactured in Sydney by a Mr Manning. Sold at our auction of 27.7.2009 for $874 (Sale 147 Lot 385). Far superior to the strike across the flap of Harry Lower's entire to Scotland that sold for $862 at our auction of 12.5.2007 (Sale 128 Lot 308). (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5)

Carried by coastal steamer 'Havilah' to Melbourne, then by 'Red Jacket' departing 2.5.1855 and around Cape Horn via Rio de Janiero direct to Liverpool carrying 138,643 ounces of gold & 440 sovereigns (the largest amount of gold brought to England by one ship at that time) plus 270 passengers. Because of the route - and because the cover was underpaid for carriage across France - the second line of the endorsement was crossed-through. Charles Platts arrived from England in 1839, and became Adelaide's first bookseller & manufacturing stationer. (Image1) (Image2)
