OVERPRINTED THIN 'OS' WIDE SETTING: 1891 QV De La Rue Tall Stamps 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 10 2/6d pale violet and 5/- pink SG
O86-87, the 2/6d with a light horizontal bend at the base which is a characteristic of these stamps and the 5/- with two faint horizontal crease at left none of which affect the very fine facial appearance, CTO with unframed 'GPO ADELAIDE' cds, Cat
£14,000. The 2/6d is Ex 'Besancon' (III): sold for SFr3415 and the 5/- is Ex 'Besancon' (I) sold for SFr8470, a combined SFr11,885. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2018) for the 2/6d. Only one sheet of 60 of each was issued. In our experience, and
despite the relative Gibbons valuations, CTO examples are much scarcer than mint stamps. (2) (Image1) (Image2)

OVERPRINTED THIN 'OS' WIDE SETTING: 1891 QV De La Rue Tall Stamps 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 10 2/6d pale violet and 5/- pale
rose-pink SG O86-87 lower-right corner pairs each with Plate Number '1' and Value/Sheet Numbers '2/6 000055' in Green or '5/- 000050' in Violet, light horizontal bends, CTO with 'GPO ADELAIDE/ T4 /SE15/02/S.A' cds, Cat £28,000+ for normal singles. Ex
Don Pearce: sold for $27,555 (Sale 254 Lot 3275).
These famous pairs are the only recorded multiples and, because only one sheet of each denomination was printed, they are the only possible Value/Sheet Number examples. We note that Ric Slade-Slade did have pairs of both denominations. They passed
into the 'Holding' collection but are believed to have later been split into singles. (Image1) (Image2)

OVERPRINTED BLOCK 'OS' (as used for Postal Stationery): 1890 (June) QV De La Rue Tall Stamps 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 10 5/- pale
rose-pink, 'PARCEL PO ADELAIDE/[SE]5/91/[S.A]' cds. Unlisted by Gibbons. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2018) states "genuine in all respects".
See 'The Empire in Australasia' at page 146, and Ed Williams at pages 45-46. For the reason for introducing this overprint, see Williams at page 14. This stamp, only the fourth recorded, and the finest of them, was discovered after the publication of
Williams' book. In 'Besancon' (III) it sold for SFr2300, and at our auction of 30.8.2020 for $4790 (Sale 242 Lot 1460). Don Pearce's example sold for $6590 (Sale 249 Lot 1516).
The Block 'O.S.' 5/- is one of the great unrecognised rarities of Australian Colonies philately. It is believed that only 20 stamps were overprinted, of which four have survived, all of which exhibit similar centring, and all of which are cancelled
in August or September 1891.
There has been much (in our opinion unjustified) controversy in respect of this stamp. Its existence has been known of since the 1890s. Writing in Stanley Gibbons Monthly Journal (Feb 1899 at page 127), the usually reliable commentator George Blockey
stated that twenty stamps were overprinted with Block 'O.S.' in June 1890; that ten of them were issued in the same month; and the other ten were released in April 1891. If Blockey is correct, and we have no reason to doubt his veracity, the stamps
were overprinted 11 months before the Wide 'O. S.' 2/6d & 5/-.
In 'The Australian Philatelist' (Jan 1904), Blockey identified two postally used examples. In 'The Australian Stamp Journal' (Oct 1936), AE Fryar wrote "...The two stamps have since 1891 been in the possession of the same collectors...and were
acquired by me only a fortnight ago".
At the sale of the Fryar collection in 1955, the stamps were offered as a rejoined pair. 'The Empire in Australasia' (1962) listed the issue and stated "only two examples are known, both dated 13.8.91". They were priced at £30 each, compared with £25
for the Wide 'O. S.' 2/6d and 5/-, either unused or used. The pair is illustrated by Ed Williams at page 46. From Fryar, the pair was acquired by Henry Frenkle, and then by Peter Jaffé. We submit that the bona fides of this issue have been proven and
call upon Gibbons to add it to their listing. (Image1) (Image2)
