1855 QV Perkins Bacon London Printings Large Star Watermark 6d deep blue SG 3 rejoined horizontal pair both with margins close to
good, superb large-part strike of the Perkins Bacon 'CANCELLED' handstamp, Cat £30,000+ for singles. This is Positions [5-6] from the original block of 6: see 'CANCELLED by Perkins Bacon' by Peter Jaffé at page 64.
Six similarly defaced stamps from many Colonies were gifted by Perkins Bacon to Rowland Hill's nephew Ormond Hill, an egregious error of judgment that saw Perkins Bacon lose their stamp-printing contracts. Ex Colonel Harry Napier, John Griffiths and
'Besancon' (I) where sold also with [Pos 3] rejoined for SFr24,000. It was stated there that the stamps were all thinned. The opinion has also been expressed that [Pos 5] has been re-backed. However, with our vendor's consent, we have soaked the
stamps to remove all the hinge remainders including a veritable scab on [Pos 6] and can advise that [Pos 5] is superb and [Pos 6] is very fine. The third 'Besancon' stamp [Pos 3] was sold in Switzerland in 2022 for SFr13,420. (Image1) (Image2)

1855 QV Perkins Bacon London Printings Large Star Watermark 1/- dull violet SG 4, margins close to good, excellent colour,
large-part gum, Cat £40,000. Rare & one of the finest examples available to collectors. Unissued. Ex Alfred Lichtenstein & Louise Boyd Dale where described as having a small corner crease, which is not correct. There is a small area of gum missing
that could create the mistaken impression of a crease. Also Ex Michael Blake: sold at our auction of 7.2.2014 for $51,260. This result has been exceeded only by the very fine 'Besancon' (I) example that sold in 2017 for SFr55,660. RPSV Certificate
(2014).
The Shilling Violet is South Australia's most famous stamp, and one of the most enigmatic rarities of the British Empire. 500,000 1/- stamps were received in Adelaide in January 1857. However, because they were the same design as the original three
values, and because there was concern that the colour could be confused with the 6d - imagine lighting standards in Adelaide in the 1850s - the entire consignment was destroyed. It is believed that all surviving examples are derived from a block of
24 released by Perkins Bacon. Six of these bore the 'CANCELLED' handstamp, of which 4 can be accounted for. Of the other 18, Tony Presgrave accounted for the whereabouts of 15, of which four are in institutions: see "Shilling Violet" Issue No 1 (Aug
1985). According to Michael Blake, "a plausible reconstruction [based on aligning margins indicates this] stamp is position 240, the last stamp in the sheet". (Image1) (Image2)

1856-58 QV Perkins Bacon Adelaide Printings Imperforate 2d blood-red SG 8 block of 4, margins just touching - at upper-left - to
large with fragments of the two adjoining units at right, both upper units affected by Dry Ink or Ink-Stripping at the top, a couple of ironed-out creases/bends, indistinct circle-in-bars cancels of the GPO clear of the pale areas. Ex Don Pearce:
sold for $1557 (Sale 249 Lot 1034). Such varieties are a feature of the blood-red printing, caused by inconsistent wiping of the printing-plate. Only one other 'blood-red' block of 4 is recorded. Also Ex Don Pearce, it is superb, and sold for $3833
(Sale 249 Lot 1035). (Image1)

1858-59 QV Perkins Bacon Adelaide Printings First Rouletted Issue 2d red as SG 15 with the Design Partly Doubled (most evident in
'TWO PENCE; which is also subject to a Dry Ink effect), marginal example from the base of the sheet, rouletting except at right where cut from the sheet to preserve the design, light numeral cancel. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2007) states "Genuine
in all respects. Very rare" but mistakenly states the stamp is the "2d bright vermilion SG 26", which it clearly is not. Illustrated above Lot 303.

1858-59 QV Perkins Bacon Adelaide Printings First Rouletted Issue 2d pale red Printed on Both Sides SG 15a horizontal strip of 3
with the original impression on the 'reverse' on a slight angle & inverted relative to the 'face', full rouletting, very fine 'PAID/FE23/1861/ 5 /=ADELAIDE SA=' cds in blue, Cat £2850+ for singles. Superb. Ex AE Fryar, Julian Beresford and Don
Pearce: sold for $5990 (Sale 249 Lot 1051). Gary Diffen's block of 6 - corner fault at lower-right - sold for £5040. Remarkably, both items are cancelled on the same day and are almost certainly from the same sheet, but they are not contiguous.
The price at the 1955 Fryar sale was £100, which was a fearsome sum at the time. In fact, only one other item in that auction sold for more: the 4d ultramarine with Surcharge Omitted SG 68c (now Cat £55,000), that made £160: see Lot 348. (Image1)
