1909 (Apr 14) double-rate usage of McCorquodale KEVII 3d Registration Envelope to Bavaria (which was autonomous from Germany until
1918) with mixed reign franking QV Sidefaces ½d 2d & 2½d purple/blue added tied by BN '226', 'REGISTERED/ALBION' handstamp (rated RRR) plus rare black/white 'ALBION' R label tied by 'ALBION' cds, Brisbane transit backstamp. Superb. Ex Bernie Manning:
sold for $868 (Sale 234 Lot 233).
In 1908, black/white labels were introduced to replace use of the 2-line handstamps which were not, however, withdrawn. Old habits die hard & many covers have both a handstamp & a label. The ERD for a black label is 21.11.1908, and they were in
general use for only three years. As a class they are difficult to find, with labels from all but the large towns being scarce to rare.

1855 QV Perkins Bacon London Printings Large Star Watermark 2d rose-carmine SG 2, margins close to good, superb part-strike of the
Perkins Bacon 'CANCELLED' handstamp, Cat £15,000. Superb. Ex EB Lye, Colonel Harry Napier, John Griffiths and 'Besancon' (I): sold for €8400. This is Position 1 from the original block of 6: see 'CANCELLED by Perkins Bacon' by Peter Jaffé at page
64. Superior quality and appearance to Don Pearce's example - Position 3 - that sold for $11,380.
Six similarly defaced stamps from many Colonies were gifted by Perkins Bacon to Rowland Hill's nephew Ormond Hill, an egregious error of judgment that saw Perkins Bacon lose their stamp-printing contracts. Peter Jaffé's two examples - Positions 2 & 5
- sold for $14,950 & $19,805 respectively. According to our records, with the exception of the Trinidad 6d & 1/-, this appears to be the only other Ormond Hill 'CANCELLED' stamp of the 75 known for which all six positions have been recorded. (Image1) (Image2)
