POSTAL CARDS - ESSAY: 1896 Post Office Design Competition entry by "Kangaroo" of a Wrapper ½d Coin design with very elaborate (and
thus unsuitable) header incorporating numerous design elements including a train & a spear-toting Aborigine, expertly executed in reddish purple & Chinese white on thin card (315x246mm) with a number of marginal endorsements including "Prize divided"
as well as "take out newspaper only", suggesting the design might have been considered for a Postal Card, for which it was clearly more suitable; plus an apparent voting sheet showing this as the most popular entry. A stunning exhibition item, absent
from the Walker/Eustis Collection. Sold at our auction of 25.3.2021 for $3775. (Image1) (Image2)
